Someone convince me not to buy this…

You can pick up a nifty fifty for around £50 new, excellent low light & sharp lens & well worth it imo.

I'd definitely go for the 2nd hand 30D though tbh & get someone to check it out thoroughly before you buy. I've only ever bought two new cameras, the rest have been 2nd hand.

Good luck choosing (know what you mean about the other half getting fed up with photog talk )

I have a 400D and it's great, but I wish I'd have just bought the body and then added a decent lens.
If you can buy the body only for £377 then do it !Then get the nifty fifty lens and you're away !

(I mean a NEW 400D !! )

yooohooo

body with 18-55 lens is currently £377

http://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk/prod192.html

400D body only is down to £349

the body WITH the 18-55 kit lens is the way to go. Its a light, cheap, reasonably sharp lens (it really is when you work with it) and only £28.

I really don't understand all the paranoia about the kit lens, it frightened me off of using it for a couple of months, almost gave it away. When I did try it it was great. Yes there are better lenses, but at a significantly greater price than £28, and it gives you a good wide angle, it makes a good LIGHT compact walkabout lens and is the right range for indoors portrait. Try it, if you dont like it stick it in the back of the wardrobe as a backup or sell it.

Think About The Puppies :bat:

That's a very good point Dod has made, £500 would be a decent down payment on a nice new pair of puppies. :naughty: That would keep the other half happy as well.

:D

PMSL Hacker!

I agree about the kit lens, nothing wrong with it at all and you can get some corkers with it

However.... Think of the puppies.. the fury canine type!

I think an important thing to consider is....contrast colour matching.....will this 400D compliment your eyes, aaand just what will you wear with it, I mean its £500 now but the implications financially for a visually pleasing ensamble could be catastrophic.
These are all important considerations not to be taken lightly, but the most intense deliberation must be reserved for whether your bum looks big with it.
I cant use a Hassleblad cos it clashes with my fishnets:(

:D
stop faffing and buy it, ya cant put a price on happiness....eh...eh..

The same money would buy you a "real camera" - second-hand D200s are going for close to that now... :D

Somehow I think that will not be a good argument for you!

Advice from a "gadget junkie":bonk: spend that money and enjoy it while you can......Go On, Go On, Go On, Go On, Go On :woot::woot::woot::woot:

Right, after reading a review, it would seem the kit lens is actually, well, crap.

So what would you all recommend for mostly portrait photography? :)

85mm f/1.4 Nikkor

sersly tho, your right to buy body only and choose your own glass, s'all pound notes tho, kit lenses are built to a budget..generally

get Canons nifty, if its half as good as Nikons, it'll be great

the nifty fifty would be good and cheap the f1.8 is very cheap but no zoom, for the £30 i would have the std for the zoom and look to see what range you use most. is this for the 400 or the 30d?

Betty
I've just read all 55 replies and although there is some really good advice above:rules: such as

buy a 50mm 1.8 (nifty fifty)
look at second hand kit
shop around
do the touchy feely thing - get a feel of the cameras
Go the next step – 30d /40d

nobody has asked you what you want the camera to do? - What are your expectations - do you shoot sports/ studio / landscape
or are you ok with manual / bracketing / exposure compensation?

What do you want the camera to do?
What do you want to do with the camera?

The waiting is killing me..........:eek::eek:

Have you decided yet?

I love my 400D...the size of the screen makes a huge difference to assessing my shots. Not seen the 30D but my hubby has a 20D and the screen is TINY in comparison.

;)

dogs are just for christmas
a 400d is for life!

nah, keep the money and take the OH away for a weeks holiday, you wouldnt want a new camera anyway, gets far too expensive and the 2nd mortgage is a killer!!

18-55 kit lens is not crap.

Its not the best lens in creation, but its also very far from being the worst.

Its image quality is slightly less than a nifty fifty at 50mm, but infinitely better at 20mm.

It is also has nowhere near as good image quality as a 17-55 f2.8 IS, but its also a bit cheaper (£600 vs £28 . . .) and most people wont notice the difference until you blow it up and start comparing pixels.

Build quality is poor, its got a wobbly front element and horrid manual focus. So what? People dont look at your lens, they look at the results. Do you photos have big letters on them saying "taken with a lens with rotating front element and no distance scale"

I believed the reviews until I tried using the lens. Its not perfect, but it does take cracking good photos. For £28 its not worth not having. Seriously. Bundled with the body its half the cost of a nifty fifty, but will do a lot more.

The reviews cause kit lens hatred and the reality is there is not much wrong with it. Its weak in certain areas, you just have to adapt your technique to avoid them. 18-24mm is soft and a little bit of distortion below 20mm, its also softer towards maximum aperture. Build feels bad, but I reckon its probably slightly nicer build than the nifty fifty.

For £28 it will allow you to take photographs and get good results. It'll then make a great backup when your technique is on a level where its worth moving to better glass, and you know what you need.

Remember, its not the camera, its the photographer.

I am back again aint I? :D

Reading a tog mag this morning, up popped an ad for Jessops saying they will match any price? Is this right? Cos that means I can go into Jessops this afternoon and walk out with something rather than wait for a delivery :D

And a Canon 50mm from Jessops is about £90, seem fair? Seeing as Ill prob say Ive seen it cheaper? :p

Hmm last time I tried Jessops their price matching was iffy. The 50mm can be had for about £50-70 on ebay depending on how lucky you are. So you could ignore that and have it today. I often favour the having today :D

Betty

If your going into Jessops, it gives you chance to try the 400d, if they do the match (they did once for me) and you like it then buy it, the kit lens gets you up and running. The nifty is cheaper elsewhere (Kerso) so if later you feel its for you, you can save a couple of quid for cards etc. Enjoy which ever way you go, I know you wont look back.

Jim M

I think the latest Jessops price match policy is that they will match either

Any ad in the magazine with the price match promise (Youll usually find a Warehouse Express advert in there)

Any UK retailer on body or lenses only (not accessories or other stuff), providing they have stock.

Tried to call Jessops before I make the half hour journey for nothing, they wont answer the sodding phone!

Got through, 400D plus lens is £399.99.

Hmmm... what to do, what to do... :D

I'm guessing by now you're buying it ;) I think the thing is to go try it. If you like it, buy it. Its not a bad camera in any respect and you'll get great photos from it. Obviously the 30D is technically better because its the next model up. But end result, doing portraits, you'll be fine with the 400D.

hi i got a canon rebel xt of internet plus 70-210 lens brilliant deal works great money well spent:wave:

Pete...there was an EF70-210 zoom....very similar to the EF75-300 but with a pseudo macro function. I had one a few years back.

I'm guessing that if he got the name of the camera wrong its possible he got the lens wrong too ;) Its not a Rebel XT TDCI 1.6 in the UK :p Of course its possible he does have the 70-210. I have an 80-200 :)

Wow is this thread still running !!
I'll add another twopence worth then!
For the money you have available, don't have anything second hand - buy new.
