Someone convince me not to buy this…

Hell no - share my pain.

SPEND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

:help:

I can't see one logical reason to deny yourself this gear. ;)

£500 is about 5% of the deposit on a house
£500 would save a puppy
£500 makes nice crinkly sounds when you hold it in your hand
£500 can be converted into £1000 at the casino by going "RED"
£500 could be an extra payment on the mortgage, saving hundreds in 25 years.
£500 could get you 25 Indian carry outs
£500 would get you a greenhouse allowing you to grow your own vegetables, become self sufficient and save the planet.

You decide :p

Or you could just get the camera ;)

You only live once and we-re all a long time dead ... :suspect: ... get it spent ffs ... :D

:p

This is all my kind of talk.

Sorry...if you want it...BUY IT! :D

Looks like I'm in a majority of ONE as usual :(

For this money I'd be aiming for a low mileage secondhand 30D. If it comes body only then an 18-55 will only be another 30 quid. A 30D sans grip will be close to the feel of a 400D with grip so a grip isn't an issue. A CF card is small change when parting with this much money. The "subjective" build quality would swing it for me.

Whatever you do though...spend the money.

Bob

What will you do without it only regret not buying.....something...Bob has a good idea though...

Bill

Get The Damn Thing, Woman,...... And Enjoy It!!! :d

Actually I agree with Canon Bob.... Id go for the next series up.............but spend that money.. make yourself happy. :D

Good advice and exactly what I did, picked up my 30D for less that £400 and could have got a kit lens and compact flash card with the change!

Thing is, and I cant explain why, I am a bit dubious about buying second hand.

To be honest, I might feel a bit more comfortable in a few years time once I know what to look for in S/H kit, for now I think new is the way to go, is that wrong? :p

A 6 month old Mercedes 220 or a new Fiat Panda...you choose !

Bob

Edit....
I'm using the analogy to define secondhand and not suggesting that the 400D is vastly inferior to a 30D.

Not at all Betty ... :suspect: ... I always try to buy new and with one or two exceptions on other kit only all of my cameras MUST be new ... ;)

Have you not ordered the damn thing yet ... :suspect: ...:thinking::naughty:

I see where you comming from I wasa bit nervous about handing over such a large amount of money for kit from an unknown source, fortunately one came up on here that was easy driving distance so I got to meet the owner and have a quick play before buying which put my mind pretty much at rest!

Nice edit I was waiting for an army of 400D owners to fall on you and batter you to death with those extra 2mp!

I understand the 30D is a very good camera, but for a beginner like me, do you not think its too big of a step from a bridge camera?

you dont get somefin for nuffin, it looks a good buy, but approach it with your eyes open

for comparison:

http://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk/prod192.html

best price for 400d with 18-55 is currently £377

are the extras worth the extra dosh though?

beware the tripod is probably not much good, find out which one

check the CF card, may be a slow or generic one, genuine reliable fast sandisk extreme III are cheap from play.com, an unreliable card that loses your shots isnt much use.

3 year warranty, check who from, would it be cannon authorised repairer or will they give it to the school leaver in the back room to have a bash, is it 3rd party backed or just the shop's warranty and how long have they been trading & what happens when they fold in 3months. Are there any special conditions (annual service maybe?).

free case? again, what? is it actually going to be useful

So if it is all above board and what you want, get it!

Think About The Puppies :bat:

I'm doing my best Betty, don't think you're listening though :D

I dont like puppies so I am not listening to you :D

It certainly isn't Betty....operationally, the bodies are very similar and I'll even send you a 30D training video that I got for my wife.....which was a good swap but means that I have to cook my own meals now

Bob

I fully understand what you mean about buying second hand Betty. I was / am the same when it comes to buying second hand.
When I bought my first DSLR I was unsure of what to test for in the shop. All this talk of hot pixels, dead pixels on the screen and sensor etc...It made me worry (unnecessarily I might add!).

Its a big step from a bridge camera, but it's one I don't think you'd regret (either the 400 OR the 30).

Go into Jessops, and hold a 400 and a 40 (which is similar to the 30D), and see which feels more comfortable for you. You may find a 400 is too small. You may find a 30/40 too big!

The 400 does have sensor cleaning, which can be a bonus for those who are wary of cleaning the sensor themselves (or paying to get it cleaned).
There aren't that many other things that the 400 can give you, but the 30 does have some viable extras..Faster frame rate, spot metering etc, but admittedly its an older model now, what with the 40D coming out.

I think if you find one for a nice price. I would personally go for the 30D. But thats just my opinion :)

Betty, I went from a Canon Powershot Pro1 to an EOS 350d for my leap from bridge to dslr. I'm glad i took that route as the step wasn't vast and i learned the abilities of the dslr quickly.

Its fair to say i outgrew it quickly too, but not before i'd spent a good 6 months with it and become proficient in controlling exposure manually (the first thing to learn imho).

i then moved to a 30d as the next step in the journey.

This (I think) was the right thing for me to do and i dont regret it at all.

But remember, you need to feel a level of comfort in the choice you make and personally, I wouldn't want my first DSLR to be second hand.

Now spend your money before i come rob you

the 400D still needs manual sensor cleaning eventually. Its not a perfect system.

Lack of spot metering on the 400D is not a show stopper, its still got choice of evaluative, centreweighted average and partial (ie. big spot). I survived many years with metering systems that were a LOT less fancy. The histogram and flashing highlights gives you a lot of info so you can supplement the metering system's limitations.

I went from a P&S to a 40D (was a present so not my choice!) and I have coped, at least the features are there for when I learn how to use them in the future even if I don't use them now!!

Most of the lenses that came with it are 2nd hand and they are fine, if I was to buy for myself I'd rather buy a higher spec thats used but been looked after.

Get ordering something!!!

i also jumped point and shoot to the 40d, and think the extra size and weight alone are worth it(no ideas on the spec differences, but arent all the options on the 400 on the 30 other than sensor cleaning?). but follow the advise and get down to jessops and decide which is the better size for you. plus the 30d would last longer and save you having to upgrade in 6 months if need be.

Failing that, just pick one and order it, the jump from the bridge cam will make it seem the right choice no matter which decision you go for!

I bet you've got a little "Canon Bob" doll now and you're sticking pins in it...:'(

Haha, you wally :D

Ive given up for today, got too many options, and if I keep banging on about it, its going to jeopardise my relationship :D:D

I've tried posting threads like this I got no sympathy so I will give none
F'crissakes spend spend spend, woman :D
Oh and the 400D? good cam'ra

Dont buy anything just yet.................lets keep this thread going , there are some cracking responses coming along, anyway have you thought about the new 450.....!!!!! a 40 in 400 body I reckon..............good luck......too many choices.

I have a 400D and it's great, but I wish I'd have just bought the body and then added a decent lens.
If you can buy the body only for £377 then do it !
Then get the nifty fifty lens and you're away !

(I mean a NEW 400D !! )

Cop out ... :suspect: .. or what ... :cuckoo:

;)

:p

Dont panic Ven - she'll see the error of her ways soon enough.
Classic case of confused priorities:puke:

:D

Never thought of that

I thought the nifty was only for Nikons? Or am I getting that confuzzled with something else? ;) How much would that go for then?
