Canon 5Diii or 6Dii?

Like many, I have been waiting on the 6Dii for ages now. I've been wanting to upgrade from my 7D for some time as I have a love/hate relationship with that camera. It's a great camera but the grainy/noisy images from it are awful at times. 7Ds have a reputation for it and mine seems to be a particularly bad copy.

Anyway, with that in mind, early last year I almost bought a 6D. I just wanted cleaner images and I was drawn to full frame. The 6D was the lowest priced FF camera I could find but I was put off by its AF system and fps rate. I shoot mainly landscapes but I also enjoy taking wildlife pictures and I think the 6D wasn't as up to that as my 7D was.

Now it's here, the 6Dii and I really like the look of it. The AF sytem is vastly improved, a nice shiny new sensor and I also find the tilting touchscreen particulary appealing with my creaky knees. My T10 has a tilt screen and it makes life so much easier. The 6dii, whilst maybe not perfect, ticks a lot of boxes for me. I'm not bothered by the video on it, I don't do video and if I did, I'd buy a dedicated video camera. I don't think video has any place on a DSLR but that's another story.

Now, the problem is, the price. £2k. The same as a 5diii at the moment. So that is now a dilemma. I so want to treat myself to the 6d but I just can't quite get over the price. If it was £200-300 cheaper, it would be easy and I would already have pre ordered but whilst it's parallel with the 5Diii, I just can't pull the trigger.

Maybe in time, it will come down in price but the 5Dmkiv took over a year to come down and then only by £150, which is a relatively small percentage considering the cost of that camera. I'm not expecting the 6Dii to come down signifiicantly anytime soon.

So, 5Dii with it's older but still very good technology, or a shiny, spanky 6dii?

I'd take a 6d2 over the 5d3. Its better in pretty much every area bar a few less AF points, but 'd almost guarantee the newer Hybrid AF, duel pixel AF tech which upscales the AF a few notches and digic 7 will make up for that.

I don't use Canon cameras (well I do but they are film ones ...) ... If the 1/4000th max shutter is ok (and it will be for 99+% of folk) and you aren't troubled by having just one card slot available then the 6Dii seems the better bet for your needs. I'm certain the IQ will be better than the 5DMkIII (the old 6D was marginally better imo). tbh it looks a really nicely rounded camera :)

Dale, id save the cash and get the 6d2, 5d3 although a capable camera is old tech and an old sensor, now replaced by the Mk4 so, for the sake of £200-300 i'd get the 6d2 for all the reasons you have pointed out! as an aside, the sensor is the new gen that showed up in the 80d its a massive step up from canon previous sensor tech. (albeit not a big enough step compared t the competition in my personal opinion)

Cheers guys. I'm about to pull the trigger on a Mkii I think:whistle:. I will be parting with a 70-200f4L and an old Sigma lens to take some of the sting out. (y)

If it was £200-300 cheaper,

A few weeks after release it probably will be. Look for it at Hdew if you can wait just a little longer.

I'm considering upgrading my 5d3 with a 6d2 at some stage in the future. It looks like better value than the 5d4.

There's the thing, I've waited a long time.

WEX are saying they are expecting deliveries to start arriving mid July and we're off to Elan Valley for a week first week of August. I've probably missed the boat now but I may well pull the trigger tomorrow if they can give me a reasonable chance of receiving the camera by the time we leave.

I am hoping to get down to Carmarthen Cameras tomorrow as they have a 6D2 coffee morning - though I will phone first to see if I can keep the images I take. If they say yes then I will be trying it with the extremes - namely my 16-35 and 800mm lenses. If I can't use my own memory card then I will save some petrol.

It looks very promising on paper but only actual use will help me decide................

P.S. The Elan valley can be stunning if the light co-operates! This place is well worth a look:

I have a 6D and the Mk2 looks mighty tempting... but that price.
The original 6D has much better IQ than the old 7D, but a worse AF system. In fact it's basically the same AF system as the old 5D Mk2, so I wouldn't go for that either.

The £2000 price tag on the 6D Mk2 is a tad high considering the price of the 5D Mk3 and 5DS, etc. For £2k you could buy a secondhand 6D and a secondhand 5D3.

If you have money burning a hole in your pocket, buy a 7D Mk2, the image quality is much better than the Mk1, you won't have to sell any EF-S lenses, it'll perform brilliantly on wildlife and can still be good for landscapes.
Or if you want the options, but an 80D for wildlife and a 6D Mk1 (secondhand) for landscapes)

Also I wouldn't trade in your 70-200 f4L in desperation, I'd keep that.

I'm gonna keep my 6D for another couple of years, but then the Mk2 will have come down in price and there'll be a few on the secondhand market.

I know that its a bit more of a stretch, but what about the 5d mk4 from Panamoz for £2441?

The OP said he shoots mainly landscapes. The 7D MkII was designed as a wildlife and sports camera. If the 6D MkIIs sensor follows Canons recent releases then it's going to blow the 7D MkII away in terms of noise and dynamic range. Possibly it will be better than the 5DIV which, considering it's a 30meg sensor runs the 1DX MkII very close. The 6D MkII will probably do a better job as a dual purpose camera than the 7D MkII. I sold a 5D3 for a 7D MkII and regretted it every day.

People are still saying that Canons latest sensors still aren't up to it but they have improved low ISO DR significantly with the latest sensors and although the Nikon D750 and D810 still have an advantage at low ISO over the 5D4, above ISO 300 the Canon is as good as or better than both.

Cheers guys, all worthy thought provoking stuff. (y)

I had considered a 7DMkii about a year ago now but I was worried about the noise issues. I know it's better than the Mki but by all accounts, not as good as a Canon FF sensor in low light. I have a decent amount of L glass and I think it would shine better on a FF camera than a crop sensor, hence why this upgrade will be FF.

My 70-200 F4 sits right between the lenses I have, 24-105L, 100-400L, 300L, 100L, so in a few ways, the 70-200 is superflous to me now. It's a lovely lens but do I need it?

Elan Valley, just about my fave place in Wales, I've been there many times, I was brought up in the South Wales Valleys and I spent a lot of time in Elan. I'm hoping for overflowing dams this time and hopefully, still conditions too, for some reflections.

I have no allegiance or preference to brands, I just happen to be Canon as it was my first DSLR and I bought Canon glass as a result. Jumping ship now would be expensive. I have considered importing a Mkiv though, I have imported previously, my 7D is an import from Digitalrev. That's putting me off importing a little as if my 7D had been UK bought, it would've been sent back.

Don't know if its even worth importing now.

I had £1200 off the 6D back then.

You would be lucky to get a few hundred off these days.
