Somebody found a particle ... cost around $3 Billion apparently!

It doesn't take much research to find dozens of examples of zero point or other energy devices that produce more energy than takes to run them. I might even have some plans knocking around you could experiment with. Tesla solved this problem decades ago.

I'm not especially enamoured with those who think they are privy to a exclusive truth X where truth X is studiously untestable using the scientific method.

that's a physical impossiblity that violates E=MC squared.

there's even a ten thousand quid prize available for anyone who can build a perpetual motion machine that stands up to scientific analysis - its never been claimed because its not possible to do so
 
Apologies for not having read ALL the replies here....But if you ever require an MRI or PET scan, you might want to drop those chaps at Cern a quick note to thank them for thier help.
 
The thing that distinguishes humans from every other species on the planet is the ability to think and visualise. Science is at the fore front of this endeavour. We owe everything we do as photographers to scientists.

Understanding the laws of optics, and wave/particle duality explains phenomena like diffraction, and understanding that lets lens designers build better optical systems

Understanding about photons, and electrons is fundamental to sensor design

Understanding about particles as a whole is fundamental to all types of medical imaging and energy creation

If scientists and thinkers such as Aristotle though to the modern day scientists did not push boundaries, then we would still be in the middle ages

where?

in space, in the absence of other forces on it, with no friction, something will continue moving forever. If the contents of the universe are expanding fast enough (post big bang) in theory, it will be in perpetual motion forever

What about gravity?

Current thinking is that eventually equilibrium within the universe will be reached, everything will 'stop' and that'll be that, job done.

I know

If the universe keeps expanding, an object in space will also be getting further away from everything, meaning as time goes by, the forces acting on the object become less and less. If the object has enough momentum in the first place, the effect from the rest of the objects will be overcome

Thats why scientists are trying to account for the "lost mass in the universe" because if you study Hubble's formula, you can extrapolate that the universe will continue to expand for ever if the mass is below a certain threshold

Additionally, ask yourself this. Why does the earth not fall into the sun?
 
I had the privilege of working at CERN back in the late 70's when the Proton Synchrotron was the big thing and predated the hadron collider. Being around those guys was literally mind blowing.

Ive still got memories of being in the local restaurant and these guys drawing particle physics graphs and diagrams all over the napkins and talking about quarks, colour and how good the steak was :D

Do i think the money spent is worth it ??.... hell yeah!

and the relevance is, thats fairly schoolboy physics and not real adding to any discussion?

for a short answer look at the speed of our orbit, held in near equilibrium by the sun's gravitational field and centrifugal force

yeah but in a machine 'no friction' is also an impossibility - also this was in relation to solving our energy crisis and the suposed zero point machines that violate the laws of physics so iys safe to assume the its reffreing to o planet earth

I think the whole point surrounding the discovery of this particle is that we don't know where it may lead us but we have to keep trying otherwise we'd never advance, so it's all about long term goals I guess.

Perhaps a vague analogy in reference to starving people in the world could be is it better to send them food or to provide them the means to make their own food? What if finding this particle is the foundation to creating a new source of energy which enables us to move resources faster and at a fraction of the cost? That in itself would eclipse any short term gains from using the money for immediate relief.

I believe the population of the world is too high and growing far too quickly. We are going to bleed the earth dry and I often wonder about all this oil we are extracting from the ground, maybe just like an engine the oil needs to be there to keep things lubricated! lol
 
I think it's easy to blame scientists just because you hate paying tax. At least this money spent will progress us into a new understanding of the universe which is priceless. The money spent on this is nothing compared to the money spent on funding war!

For me it's a big step forward, and like has been said without science we'd really be in very dark and corrupt times!

I hope it proves that god is dead

I would obviously have to make a few changes around here, sweary filter would go to start with, that should liven things up a little :thumbs: Hamsters will be replaced by something much more efficient, although where they will go after is anyones guess :thinking: around in circles presumably :shrug:
