Sorry I haven't been around much recently peeps. Been a bit busy with things after christmas.

Anyway, I have an interview in about 10 days time that could lead to a massive amount of work. The people in question have looked at my website and told me that provided I can come up with a portfolio of shots that prove I can be as creative in a studio as I am with my landscape stuff then I should be good to go.

Now the problems start.....
  1. I'm Broke.......... Completely and utterly. My main client is dicking us about with our payments at the moment and laura has just changed jobs so we have a month gap in her wages. Not good. No money for kit or studio hire. I can probably scrape enough together for a 'folio case and some A3 paper!
  2. I don't have a studio........ I do have a spare room, a couple of flashes and a big dollop of imagination. At the moment I'm thinking improvised soft boxes and umbrellas. Ideally I'd like to do this in a proper studio, but unless you know of anybody who's going to let me use a studio/flashes etc. for free then it's a non-starter!
  3. What to put into my portfolio....... General still life, product shots, food shots etc. They don't want to see portrait stuff particularly, but I think it may be a good idea to have one or two in there. I'm not really lacking in inpiration but I'd be interested to hear what other people think about this bit.
  4. Presentation........Mounted or just in the case?
Please don't take this as one of those........
I've just bought a digital camera and I've got my first wedding this weekend..........
type of threads. I have absolutely no doubt that I have the ability and experience to do this job, I'm used to working to deadlines and under pressure along with fulfilling client briefs. I'm just looking for some advice, guidance and help really. I will only get one shot at this and I do not want/can't afford to balls it up!

So, thoughts please on any of the above points, pitfalls I need to look out for etc.

Thanks in advance, I'm sure you will all come up with the goods.

P.s. I have a new photoblog if anybodies interested.....

allaboutlight | photoblog

It doesn't have any new stuff on it yet. But it will soon. hopefully!

mebbe if you reveal your geographical location
someone nearby might be able to assist

Oh yeah, I'm in bath, NE somerset.

I severely doubt that anybody will be able to help me on a material level, that's not really what I was driving at. More just advice and thoughts really.

but unless you know of anybody who's going to let me use a studio/flashes etc. for free

You really would be very welcome to make use of it all if you want to. :)

Can't help with the free studio, sorry, and as your down Bath way my lights won't help either as I'm in Nott's.

But I may be able to help you run some prints off, I could do about a dozen or so A4's at work for you if it helps. 250g semimatte. Pro quality GMG paper. If you speak to Glo she'll tell you what the quality is like etc., as I helped her out of a sticky patch last year when she need a couple of prints.

As for what style/format etc., what is the business of the interviewer? Can you taylor some stuff to suit there needs/existing clients so to speak.

As for presentation, I'm not sure, never done it myself, perhaps just loose so as to save on costs?

I can get card samples through work should you want/need to use some for mounting etc., they normally come in half a dozen A1 sheets to a sample pack.

Thanks Glen, I may well take you up on that offer. It's for a publishers, they do all sorts of stuff but are in need of a studio donkey to produce product shots etc. for features. Not desperatly inspirational but I'm soooo hacked off with the people I'm working for at the moment that it's got to better in the long run. Plus I'll still be able to carry on with my property stuff, just that now I'll be able pick and choose which ones I do.

I may just have to write you into my will or offer you a spare organ

Lets just start with a pint shall we. ;)

Would be nice to be the studio lacky for a change. :)

I'm afraid I can't help you at all Gandhi ... ... although I really wish I could ... :D

But I just wanted to comment on what a grand bunch of responses you've had so far ... ... it never ceases to amaze me what a genuinely super group of members we have here ... ... makes me come over all goose bumpy when I read these unsolicited offers of help and assistance ... :D

How can you fail to win your prospective new commission m8 ... :suspect: ... when you've got the might and benefit of TP and all its very generous and kindly members ... ... good luck to you and much  to all the guys willing you on ... ;)

:p

Bit like Ven I can't help you either mate but best wishes and all the best with the interview :)

:notworthy:

Wow!

I never expected a response like this lol! At best I thought I'd get a couple of pointers in the right direction lol!

Thankyou all so very much, you've re-affirmed my faith in human nature! Fingers crossed and I'll let you know how I get on!

Yeah, sorry, been very busy recently. Alas not with this publishers. Despite some very much appreciated help from Dazzajl I was deemed not to have enough experience. Which is fair enough, having only spent about 6 hours in a studio total lol.

Thought my blagging skills would've been up to the task, but I was rumbled!!!! Oh well, back to the drawing board!

A big hug and a thankyou to all those who helped or offered help though!
