Some people selling on auction site, taking the mick!

Yes
I very rarely go on that auction site (not worth giving it a mention), but I did a search and that auction site came up. I was looking at various compact cameras, and some listings are ridiculous.

Below, the first listing I read. Plenty more, just like it.
  • EVF not working.
  • Item does not come with charger.
  • Item does not come with battery.
  • No box
Plenty of listing like the above. Plus, they are asking a very high price, plus high delivery charges. I doubt if I would ever make a purchase on there again. Not unless the seller was local, and I could inspect goods first.

 so don't buy those? May be look at other listings for ones that are complete and working?

Oh by the way, it was not about me not being able to spot a good / fair, or a bad deal. It was about listings that take the mick. By offering cameras for sale at high prices, that either have a fault, or are incomplete, or both. ;)

Some people will try to flog anything and some people assume that if it’s on a certain auction site that those items must be cheap and still worth the price plus repair.

Either that or they savvy and intentionally trying to drive up the price of faulty goods so that serviceable ones look like better for value for money or worth the extra spend. I don’t think I’ve ever bought photography equipment there, used kit has only ever come from the Classifieds here or a reputable used dealer.

One mans junk is another mans treasure and some have more money than they know what to do with.

Odd things sold on a well known auction site

  • A grilled cheese sandwich with the face of Virgin Mary. ...
  • A ghost in jar. ...
  • A haunted rubber duck. ...
  • A Dorito shaped like the Pope's hat. ...
  • The meaning of life. ...
  • A grandmother. ...
  • Britney Spears bubble gum. ...
  • Unwanted brussel sprouts.

I hate junk and tat, I have got too much of my own. :)

Some incomplete cameras and sometimes with faults, get listed for ridiculous prices. Sometimes dearer than what you can buy new.

People selling a camera without a box?
Disgraceful. How will the camera ever work if there is no box in the attic.
They should be banned immediately.
I did wonder if buying a box separately from another seller might be the answer to this, but I wasn't sure if I'd then have to send the box and camera to an approved service centre to get them calibrated first? ;)

Apparently the reason empty boxes are sold on there is for trying to scam insurance companies who may accept the fact that you’ve lost your receipt but hey, here’s the box and the manual so you must have owned the contents right? It’s supposed to be a biggy with high value phones

Boxes are valued as they tend to suggest that the seller probably does actually own the item being sold, rather than having "found" it or acquired it by other means. A box with the same serial number as the contents is particularly highly valued by Leica owners, who may not buy without it. Lack of a charger, software, etc, "might" suggest the opposite?

Sarcasm aside, I must admit I sometimes get alarm bells when someone is literally selling the body and battery or sometimes with a lens and literally nothing else, especially when there is no charger. It does whiff a little of being 'found' somewhere.

Otherwise, judge each one on its merits. You can filter out the faulty ones with the search filters. Who cares if someone is asking too much for something? They'll either sell it and prove you wrong or they'll not and have to reduce it. As long as you're not the one over paying, I cannot see a big issue.

I did see one listing for a particular camera that I was interested in. It had a fault with the EVF and did not come with the battery or charger. Sold as camera only, and nothing else. They were asking a shade under the new price. By the time you purchase a battery and a charger, it worked out dearer than a new one. What is the point? Is anyone really that silly?

Some people buy faulty cameras in order to remove the working components to fix other cameras.

If it's not working, don't buy it, but I don't understand why they are taking the mick if the listing clearly states it's faulty.

Not in the case that I saw, it did not state in the heading it was faulty. It was only in the small description.

It should say Spares or repair.
It should be priced as a spares item!

So no I will not buy it.

Simples..

Or maybe not for some people. lol

So lets see.

You have a camera that is broken, it was worth £400 new. So you buy a broken camera of an auction site for £400. You then take the bits out of that camera, and fix your old broken camera. Why not simply pay £400 and buy a brand new camera.

lol

Good job I am in a good mood, so funny reading the replies. They are so hilarious. There is nowt stranger than folk. :D

Mobile phones on there are the best.

Keep getting those auction sites popping up, when I do a search. I will have to block them from my search results. :)

I find eBay fantastic! I have purchased all my photography items from the site and every item has been superb and saved me a fortune!
As a buyer you have 30 days to ask for a refund if item is not as described and eBay usually looks after buyers.

Long live eBay :-)

Who? I can't remember mentioning them. :)

Although I do recall looking at a camera on there a little while ago. It was described as a little rough around the edges, and he said it had dust on the sensor.

Even if the sensor had of been clean, I was no longer interested. As the camera was not an ISO Invariance model!

Assumptions!

No I wouldn’t buy it but I also wounldnt come on here complaining about it. Life’s, far to short.

There’s no law that says you cant sell your goods for whatever price you want. If you don’t like the price, move on.

Yes you are right, life is too short. Honoured you could spare the time, to come on here complaining. ;)

People may be selling for high prices but that doesn't mean that people are buying. I've seen things almost on repeat that go up a bit, down a bit at each relisting but they never sell. Then again if you wait long enough somebody may bite.

If you pay using PayPal (and this will be true for the vast majority of eBay sales) you have 180 days in which to claim.

But for the same sort of money, you can buy new.

I often see computer parts with the line of “taken out of working environment” which always makes me laugh. Yes the environment was working but this particular part wasn’t  also, why was it taken out?

Agree that one mans junk is another mans treasure though, I’ve bought plenty of old cameras that would be deemed as junk by many but there you go  you pays your money and you make your choice :D

Glad to hear people's scepticism of auction sites - you are right KEEP AWAY from them! That way there is less competition for me ;)

Canon 800 F5.6 L IS, Canon 300 F2.8 L IS, Canon 1DX, Canon 24-70 F2.8 Mk2, Wimberley 2, Triopo RS3, couple of Gitzo tripods etc etc - should I go on? I could never have owned these without a certain auction site.

So you lot keep off and let me get the bargains

A less nefarious reason is sometimes the box actually adds enough value it's worth buying to complete the product or at the very least makes it easier to sell.

Why is that a problem for you? It seems weirdly judgmental to say they're taking the mick just because you don't like their listings.

Not unless the seller was local, and I could inspect goods first.

You'll have far more guarantees buying from a certain auction site than picking it up in person through a direct sale.

Too many traders on there now, business listings after business listings. Glad it works for you. ;)

Not so much as the weird replies. ;)

People selling items that are broken, for the same price it can be bought new. Weird some people can't understand that. ;)

You can put any price on an item, but doesn't mean its the going rate.

My neighbour put a silly price on his house and wondered why it didn't sell
Are people buying these knackered cameras?

It does work the other way The guide lines are there ,look for a honest description of faults ,check the repair costs if applicable and set yourself a bidding limit . I recently saved 50% on the used price of a lens even after the repair costs were factored in .you just have to do your research .and always check a sellers feedback not just the nice green ones check the bad feedback to
