Am absolutely baffled by which flash units I can use on my 20d. Obviously very new to photography and want to start learning lighting and flash use properly so any help is appreciated. Thanks!

I enjoy portaiture and the like. Budget isn't bottomless, but as a beginner with a relatively out-dated camera, I don't want to spend thousands.

Jessops 360
Canon 430EX
Canon 430EX2
Canon 580 EX
Canon 580EX2

and a few sunpak/metz ones.

To be honest, buy a second hand 430EX. Chances are you'll regret any of the cheaper ones, name brand kit is almost always best in the long run.

If you can't afford the canon ones have a look at the Metz like the Metz 44 AF-1 Digital for around £129. In the days of film Metz flashes were the king and they still make good units. Another cheeper option would be a Nissin like the Nissin Di866 MKII or Di622. Always look for one that says canon FIT.

google yongnuo - chinese-made speedlight which I use extensively for off-camera work. Got mine on ebay for £55 a pop so not too expensive if they get bashed about.

Note, they are not a dedicated unit so will only work manually or off-camera.

And the 20D is perfectly capable - started with one and never had a problem with it.

best

Hey Kris I have a Nissin Di466 and A Yongnuo 560 both of which are good, the Nissin is TTL (through the lens, flash metering) too, can't remember if the 20D has the Canon TTL. I got them both from ebay and both cost less than £50 each. I also brought the Yongnuo digital wireless controller kit to go "off camera" ebay again and I got it for less than £30.
