Hi,
I watched the thread on Canon Forums and was immediately suspicious, but surely the mods are only there to administer the threads/posts, and as per the rules if they feel someone is harranging a poster/thread starter then they are obliged to step in. There is no way mods can protect buyers/sellers, they can help but ultimately it is "CAVEAT EMPTOR - "Let the buyer beware". eBay anyone? works on exactly that principal.
I actually thought it curious to see that no-one actually posted that "hey pal, you are losing a packet selling at these prices you'd be better adjusting them", especially as it appeared that the seller was not in the best of health and gave the impression that he was trying to get cash to take his wife on a cruise before.......? ultimately and this is only my opinion that greed can be the cause of many (not all ) people being sucked into deals like this, I wonder how many of these items HAD it been genuine would have appeared elsewhere at the 'right price'.
I hope everyone involved gets their money back, although unlikely, but please don't blame the MODS they are only their to police the threads and a damn good job they do too.
Here what I do to avoid getting caught with deals like these:
Check out when the seller joined ( the seller 'oldhand' on Canon Forums only joined just before he posted the for sale thread ), how many posts, feedback, sometimes if a seller has eBay feedback (quite oten quoted to help convice of their honesty )that is pretty high, watch out for old feedback suddenly having new items sold/bought, the account might be hijacked. Also check the feedback, he/she might be buying small value items from similar usernames just to boost feedback rating.
Ask for name, address and telephone number, ( these can easily be cross referenced via the t'intenet ) it is usually enough to put seller off you as an 'easy' catch, you will then realise he/she isn't genuine as they will most likely completely ignore you. I nearly got caught last month with an MP3 player off ebay, I WAS suspicious and asked for opinions on here, I had already asked for the sellers info and I was ignored....... that then, with the advice offered here convinced me to avoid paying, turned out he was a scammer and removed from eBay.
You can also ask as Fraggle did above to meet and pay COD, that can also make them drop you like a hot potato.
And remember Paypal protection isn't worth the paper it's written on, it doesn't protect you outside of eBay and there are quite a few requirements to meet before protection IS applied even on eBay, watch out for the 'chargeback' scam where you receive paypal payment immedately, the buyer gets goods ( says they haven't arrived and must be lost in post) and then charges back the money from you and Paypal immediately refund him the money, he now has goods AND the cash, remember Paypal payments aren't guarantee'd until they are in your Bank account and that takes 5 - 7 working days, I usually wait that time BEFORE posting.
Sorry probably drivveling on now so I'll go and fingers crossed this seller IF he/she is a scammer gets what he deserves and the buyers come out ok.
Right I'm off to the Forums to look for some bargains, I know, I can't help myself either
Mike.
