Some further 5D Mark II thoughts.

Hi Pete,

Just wanted to add my gratitude for the continued posts - I have to say your work was top notch before venturing onto landscapes, etc - you seem naturally gifted at those too!

Keep up the good work and continued interest in these great subjects. :)

Pete,

Fantastic shots you posted today :)

Looks like you're really getting used to camera. Haven't used mine all that much recently; had quite a few DIY projects to attend to, but things now settling down again for me to go and get some shots I've seen :woot:

Keep up the good work

Boxing with the 5D2 then.

Simply a delight. I will get that straight out there as perhaps people were expecting me to harp on about how good the D3 was. Well, yes, it was but I found the continual mode slow on Nikon cameras when shooting boxing and testament to that was the sheer speed at which the mark 2 and the 50mm L lens twitched when in servo mode. Naturally I could only work at three frames per second and I kinda know boxing so I still caught some decent stuff. Best of all I put the 17-40 on and went wide for some new slants and dynamic shots of local stuff. Really liking what I got and very, very pleased with the ISO performance of the camera. All of tonight's work was processed in DPP and then cropped in CS4. White balance issues reared up, again due to the MHz of lighting and camera speed, so I applied white points to the nearest thing in the shot, or the brightest point. All images shot at 6400 ISO which is nice. And, if a 5d2 can do this, despite the internet crawling with issues and threads about poor AF, then what will the Mark 4 be capable of. These are the best boxing shots I have nailed since I had Mark 2 cameras.

Nice work Pete, and showing why USM lenses murder motor driven ones for micro-adjustments on the fly.

Another interesting installment!

I have absolutely no interest in buying a 5D Mk2 but I have really enjoyed reading this thread - a really fascinating journey so lacking in the usual extremes of opinion.

Thank you!

(PS keep going!)

Excellent shots, quality is fantastic and tones are spot on mate.

Thanks once again.

Yeah - that is something I noted - the shadows are lovely and I like the way the ropes cast onto the canvas. Very detailed. Thanks again.

Further update - 13/2/2009.

Another great victory for the Mark II today, a joy to use and got everything I needed to get done done so to speak. No AF issues, no ISO issues, just solid 21mp crunching performance.

Regarding the shoot, light wise, not to bad at all as a modern gym without poor sodium lights. I did however gel up two of the three flash guns with orange stofens to counter any colour casts and keep the skin tones warm and February like. The pale blue backdrop was not ideal but I lost them at F/9 with a shutter ranging from 1/200th - 1/400th with the lights being triggered by the ST-E2 on camera. I 'did' try some second curtain synch at 200mm but it did not really work and given that the remit was nice sharp pack shots for marketing and stock I am sure all will be pleased. I like the negative space in the frame and the use of dual rim lights to create specular highlights.

Once again, all about working with what you have of which credit is due to all the table tennis players at the Academy of which some face disability and the issues that can bring daily. I know one thing, had I dusted down my old Butterfly table tennis bat I doubt very much if I would have even secured a point. The hardest thing today was getting these guys to stay on the marker as they just wanted to play table tennis full tilt.

Just chugged my way through the thread, very interesting to read your comments as you were learning about the camera.

Lovely shots there, I'm not suprised you are happy with it.

Hi Diego, just like to add my thanks for a very informative thread. Some great shots too. The guy in no. 1, above, is a picture of concentration. You mentioned shooting 1/200 - 1/400, did it always sync okay at 1/400?

Hi Diego

May i ask why your now selling the 5dmkII? (And trying to temp me into buying it :p If only i had the cash!)

You took the words out of my mouth. I'd just popped past to ask the same question.

Although the thread is now locked, and it looks self-done. Curiouser and curiouser.

If you give me £50 i'll tell you ;)

In all seriousness I think its best that Deigo tells you him self for his reasons.

Oh, I definitely agree, but only if he wants to talk about it. Otherwise I think we can all respect his privacy on this one.

Oh yeah, totally :)
I'm just curious if its the camera he isnt happy with, or if he is moving back to "The Dark Side" or what.

No reason aside from cash flow as I want to run a Nikon set up as well and I think I would prefer the Nikon work flow overall.

Thanks.

I will advertise elsewhere as people did not read the thread and I was sent loads of pm's with offers rather than on the thread at asking. I felt the prices were totally reasonable.

Thanks,

Pete.

Ok Pete, no worries :)
I was just asking, and if there was ever a perfect unbiased review for the 5dmkII then this thread is it, i'm sure you have helped boost Canon sales.

Thanks again for this thread mate

EDIT: Oh, and if you want to trade my 40d with the Sigma 24-70 for your 5dmkII, then id be happy to help you out  Only joking Pete
