Ok, my son is a Scout and his group are doing a bag packing session at our local Morrisons tomorrow, i was thinking about going down and taking some pictures of them packing bag ECT.. also maybe some cheesy Manager/ Scout leader hand shaking stuff, i was also tihnking about contacting our local journal about publishing an article about it and seeing if they can use my pics.. is this an unorthodox way to do things or does it sound right? im not fussed about getting payed for it but to get publisity for the Scouts and it'll be nice to get published!! lol..

Is there anything i should be carefull of, is there a right/wrong way to submit images?? whats best guys??

Thanks in advance..

If you don't ask you don't get. Go for it they can only say no and maybe send their own tog. Good luck:thumbs:

I wouldn't ask or inform the paper in advance. They don't know you and might send their own tog because you alerted them. Also, your photos could 'stink'. Theoretically of course. Because the weather is foul. Or you got stuck in traffic. Or, or, or. Better first get the photos then contact the paper.

So, first, ask the troupe leader. Or whatever fancy title those have these days. If it's OK for you to take photos. Does he/she perhaps want some for the Scouts Paper? So on, so forth. Then do a good set, rush home (or whip out your laptop), edit, and call the paper.

Have fun!

Best to check with the Manager as well, most shops won't take kindly to people trying to take photos in store.

my brother is a scout helper and on remembrance day he asked me to take a couple of pics of them all and then send him the pics .he told me the web ad and said he would get pics uploaded as soon as he could . i went home and had a look at the site with pictures from their previous camps etc ,all very nice .a couple of days later i looked again to see if he had used any of mine , but all pics had been removed and the words * all pictures awaiting parental consent * in their place . i dont know if a parent had complained or the scout leaders had decided not to put anything on there ,but it has got to be a good idea to get a phone call in to someone first to check .

I would not contact the paper till after the avent, just get permission from the manager and the parents of the children involed.
good luck

My daughter is the secretary for the local junior football team. They often do this to raise funds, and it is very surprising how much they raise. Your idea to photograph the event is a good one, but the way I would go about it, is to turn your article into a thank you to all the people that contributed. Your local rag would find your offer very hard to refuse.

thanks for that guys, i wasnt going to let the paper know untill id got the shots i liked, iv also got a modelrelease form iv downloaded from a magazine site, its got a parent permission part to it.. anyway, there isnt going to be lots of scouts there, just 5 or 6 so getting permission shouldnt be too difficult.. if any say no then so beit.. i'll have to take lotd of batteried cos my 580 seems to go through em like nothing else!! 10 shots and its struggling to recharge!! anyway, were off in 10 mins, i'll post back with any progress made..

That's a good point actually. Most articles of this nature are generally written by the person submitting it. The Locals tend to stick to writing the main news stuff and almost expect everything to else to be written for them these days.

Thanks for the advice guys, the day went well and nobody objected to the kids being photographed.. it was a busy day, the shop was quite manic!! lol.. anyway, i spent the 4 hours or so trying to get a good mix of ALL the scouts, not just my lad

I rang the local Gazette at about 4pm on the Edirtrial line, but there was no answer, so, i might write and article along the lins if 'With thanks' to Morrisons and the local peeps ECT.. i think that was good advise.. thanks..

As far as the pic are conserned, well, its a mixed bunch!!, im not sure what they would normaly go for but i did it mostly as candid type shots.. iv also decided that i need a new lens!! the 24-70 2.8!! i used my 17-40 F4 and it was too short and too slow!! also not too much in the Bokeh stakes!! (I need a spell check!!) my Nifty was good thoght, but that was too static, and on occasions too near!! lol.. but the wide appeture was handy.. i used the 40D for this shoot and it worked flawlesly..
Thanks again guys..

Thx DD..

Right, some more advice.. iv gotta submit a cd with the images on to the scouts press release people, now the thing is i want to KEEP the images as mine..

So, do i write on the CD 'These pictures remain the property of...'

Or do i HAVE to water mark each pic?? iv never seen water marked pics in the paper!! lol.. so i doubt that one..

Anyway, iv gotta take em in in 45 mins!! so not much time!! soz..

Thx..

Ta!

Did you get anything published fraggle?

Sorry Matt, i didnt notice your post m8, nothing published yet, im handing over the pics tonight to the Scout press guy and we'll see.. i dont hold much hope.. i feel i should have just gone straigh to the paper.. iv even written a piece to go with it!! Albit a rubbish piece!! lol..
Watch this space..

I always thought you just give them the 5 W's and let the paper boys wrap a tale around them.

Let us know of any developments.

Fraggle: You can add copyright information in the IPTC headers, provided your software will let you do it.

Also if you are submitting to the local newspapers, you'l need to add suitable captions to the pictures for them. Such as "Members of the xxx scout troup, packing Mrs Jones groceries at Morrissons" . Group shots will need names in the correct order.

Glad I'm not a news hound :D

Ok, did go as i thought, iv been given the email addy of the guy, he says he'd like it to go thru him as the scouts have built up a report with the press at his end.. i assume its so they can put their spin on thing as well.. anyway, i shall post agin when/IF anything comes of it..
Thx for the help as usual.. you guys rock..
