Hi all

I'm looking for some advice on repairing this photo for a friend. I've given it a few goes but am struggling a bit with the faces, mainly the girl and baby.
Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

Photoshop cs5 or 6 select region and fill content aware fill, might work, and some very careful cloning

Enlarge photo as much as poss, content aware in small chunks.
Clone eyes etc where detail is key.
It takes a lot if time by can be done.
Remember to save changes regularly in case you hit problems, saves starting all over.

Had a go but the problem is around the childrens eyes removing the lines. The rest isn't that hard to do. I have enlarged around the eyes but when I did there is nothing there to work on, the ink covers them . To be honest it would be easier to retake the photo if possible completely, or take the hard copy to a picture restorer who might be able to gently remove the lines with chemicals. It all depends on how important the photo is. Anyway that is the best I can think of.

I don't think it'll be easy to re-take, it looks a few years old to me.

I had a little play and even cloning skin from one to the other it really is a tricky one especially the eyes which are the most important in portraits.
As above it is probably a better option to see if the ink can be at least partly removed with a suitable solvent

I argree, it's never going to be good as is.

OP Have you got any similar shots without the ink we can take the eyes from? if we have the bits we may be able to "mix and match" so to speak.

No chance of a retake i'm afraid, i think it's nearly 40 years old and he has no similar pics either. He said there's no rush and just to do whatever can be done, even a bit of artistic license when it comes to the eyes so i'll just potter about with it as and when.
Thanks for all your efforts guys, really appreciated.

I've had a bit of a go - will admit it's not easy, chose the lad in the red jumper as he looks the second easiest!!

A larger res version would be easier to work on, and should give a better result too.

Just depends how much time you have to put into it.

If three others have a crack at the other kids, you can take the 4 edits and layer them over each other!!

There seems to be a halftone effect on the scan too. Which makes cloning difficult.

Can you scan it again, you're scanner might have an option to remove/reduce it.

Scanning at a very high resolution makes it easier to remove the effect in ps also.

Send it to an Indian retoucher like the one I posted..their work is tremendous and sometimes free!

If you're wanting people on here to have a ot at repairing it, maybe you should post a higher resolution image, because if someone does have the time to fix this for you (and it will take time) then all you'll get back is a low res version that won't print properly.

Difficult to touch up eyes without making them look like potential serial killers!
