I'm looking at buying a smaller camera just for a walkabout, i was thinking about something like a Panasonic FZ38 or FZ45, I've seen the Panasonic G series but know nothing about these i.e. how good or bad they may be, so i'm just looking for a bit of advice on what folk on here might be using for the same purpose. The only thing that concerns me about Panasonic is there low-light capabilities, however that was a while back on the likes of the FZ8 so not sure how they fare these days. Any comments or feedback much appreciated, oh and price range i'm looking at is up to £300 max, thanks :)

What about the new Nikon L810? Or the older Nikon p500, the new p510 is £399 so the p500 should be somewhat cheaper and still a great bridge. Or, of course, the fuji hs10 or hs20, great cams with mechanical zoom.

low-light capabilities is that a must have? What other capabilities do you want, wide angle, long zoom, fast optics? Does it have to be pocketable?

The Panasonic G series is a baby DSLR with interchangeable lenses and your talking more than your budget of £300.........

As well as Fuji and Panasonic, Sony have some good camera's in that ball park like the HX9.

I would prefer low-light capabilities but not a deal breaker, as long as it's reasonable in low light. I would like a decent long zoom with about 28-150mm, doesn't have to be pocketable but something smallish to walkabout with, i would also like a viewfinder on it. I have also been looking at the Nikon P7000, anyone got any experience with this or similar ? what puts me off the Fuji's is the AA batteries, about time they sorted this out.

I'm not sure what the problem with AA batteries is (they're widely available if your manufacturer-specific battery runs out of puff, and NiMH rechargeable last a long time), but I have a Fuji HS10 30x zoom (24-720) that produces excellent images and is now, sadly, surplus to requirements since I got an unexpected Christmas/birthday/father's day/whatever-for-the-next-several-years-anniversaries present...

The Hx100V has a multi shot HDR and low light modes built in. charging is done direct to camera, which I like very much as I don't have to bring a separate charger when I travel.

...mine will be winging its way toward the classifieds, though, soon- with the V1 I now have another way of getting to 800mm! still, this was one of the most fun cams I've owned; every shot I've ever taken of Norway was with this cam!

Sony NEX-5 can be had for under £400 and the low light shooting on that would be excellent compared to a bridge camera.

So are you selling the Fuji HS10 then ?

If he is, he can open a thread in the classifieds section and sell it there. That way neither of you will get infractions for selling outside of classifieds or via PM :)

I don't read it like that at all. He's no more selling his HS10 on here than I am my HX100V. It'd be silly to, anyway, seeing as you'd reach far more buyers over on the classifieds.

Anyway, to the OP, as long as you're prepared to accept a compromise; overall image quality, lens aperture, speed of operation etc... Then you'll find hidden advantages of any bridge. The ability to take a 28-700mm focal length with you in a pocket, a viewfinder or electronic finder (albeit not going to trouble the Nex7) and the sense of a 'complete package' are compelling reasons to choose a bridge camera.

You'd be surprised how many people still feel the need to bypass the Classifieds - or - and this may sound strange to some - don't actually realise that there IS a section - seeing as you can't see it as a non-member, and can't get into it for a couple of months...

Anyway - Everyones aware of it's existance now, IF they want to sell something, and perhaps more importantly, the half a dozen RTM's of attempted off-classifieds selling that we've had MAY just start drying up now...

If I, or any of my fellow mod's thought that anyone had ACTUALLY been up to shenanigins, the people involved would already have had notification privately... my message was as much for the general populace, that we're aware of the post, and to stop reporting it now :)

I will be, eventually. I don't have time right now as I'm leaving for Antarctica next week and may (will) be some time...

But in the Classifieds!

No PMs to make any enquiries please!

I had no intentions of asking digital to sell here, the reason i asked was because of the way he worded his post below, my next question would have been when did he intend to put it in the classifieds, however he already answered that in his further post

I'm actually gobsmacked that a person or persons have actually reported this, obviously someone with to much time on there hands :shake: i'm well aware of the rules for the classifieds on here, you only have to look at my feedback to see that, my question to digital was just purely out of curiosity as to when he may be selling so i could keep a look out on the classifieds, i can't believe people can be so petty sometimes

I had a Panasonic FZ38 before I got a dslr and it's a fantastic camera. The zoom range is very good and the IQ is excellent. I got a 550D and a 75-300 MkIII lens and the photos from the FZ38 were almost on a par, although the 75-300 isn't a great lens. It took until the time I got the 100-400 L to really show the difference in quality. The FZ38 also has a very short shutter lag, not as good as a dslr obviously, but I managed with it at airshows and events easily enough.
