Yes
Am going on holiday and I don't have enough memory cards ( only 14GB's) as I shoot in RAW.
A friend going with us is taking a laptop, but it doesn't have a card reader, so doing a trial today on my sisters vista computer I was unable to download the photo,s without it timing out, a saying something to do with semaphore timed out, and the camera froze.
what is the minimal amount of canon software I could install on friends laptop to download from my camera ?

Just wondered, even though I may go the easy route and get a new card reader that can cope with SDHC.

Is the laptop windows or linux. Either way, you don't /have/ to install any software. The camera will appear as a storage device if attached via a USB cable direct to the laptop.

The laptop is vista, and I keep getting Semaphore timed out, and the camera freezes.

Having a look into it, it could be because the file names are too long so not sure how I could deal with that.

If your friend's lappy has a usb port, could you just take a card reader dongle?

Yes that is the easy option I will probably take, but have to go and buy one as the old external one I have doesn't do SDHC cards.

card readers dont do sdhc, this is because sdhc are compatible with sd card slots and readers

Not quite sure what you mean there, I have a card reader that reads SD cards, but as I bought it about 10 years ago, it doesn't and isn't upgradeable to read SDHC cards.

Problem solved anyway as connected to friends computer today and was able to download photo's.
But shall be buying a SDHC card reader anyway.

you say you cant get a card reader
that is the answer i am afraid..i have the same bother with my daughters nikon compact
i dont have the nikon software which came with the camera
but my 17 card reader does it all...i only use it for Xd and Sd

My 1000D is picked up by my friends laptop with no software having to be installed. It does search for maybe 30 seconds but it always finds it.

what was the solution...:(

"card readers dont do sdhc, this is because sdhc are compatible with sd card slots and readers "

I think you'll find its the other way around, an SDHC reader will take normal SD cards. Just because an SDHC card fits in an SD reader, doesnt mean it will work.

Things getting confused here, I have an old card reader which won't read SDHC, and I didn't think it would.

I was trying to download the files without canon software, but on 2 computers I tried it on I got a semaphore time out.
When I tried today on friends computer, I was able to download the photo's, but I will also buy a SDHC capable card reader.

I have recently purchased a Dell Studio laptop specifically for my photography and also have an 450d. I was expecting to have all sorts of issues when it came to downloading images from the camera but couldn't have been more mistaken.

I connected the camera to the laptop using the provided USB cable. After turning the camera on, the laptop saw it as an external drive and automatically installed a driver without needing the disc which came with the camera.

It recognises that the camera is a 450d and shows up in explorer under "MY COMPUTER", it also Autoplays on switching it on. You simply navigate to the file containing your images (usually called DCIM).

Using this method of connection, there is no need to go out and spend your hard earned money on a card reader!!
