Sold my 50mm in haste, to buy again or try a different lens?

Hello,

A few months ago I put all my canon gear up for sale, (550d + 18-55, 70-200, 50mm f.18) in the hope that I could raise the funds to buy an OMD. The 50mm was the only one to sell, so I gave up on the idea of buying the OMD.

Being the summer I really am starting to miss by 50mm, my question is do I buy another 50mm again or try something else. I occasionally found 50mm a bit tight on my crop body.

I have thought about the 28mm or 35mm lenses, but not sure if I could buy one back again without spending a lot of money.

I think I sold the 50mm for around £60 so probably wouldn't want to spend much more than that.

Any advice/ coments would be appreciated!

Chris

For the price you seem willing to pay the only solid option would be the nifty fifty again, albeit i have one and agree can be a touch long on a crop body.
Maybe save for a bit longer and go for the 35mm?

Stretch the budget a little and consider the 40mm STM, the 10mm difference makes it more useful on crop or save up the extra and go for the 35mm.

The 50 is a poor option for most users with a crop body.

I don't understand why the 50mm is a poor option on crop?

It is pretty much the ideal portrait focal length on crop.

My best ever combo was my 5DII and 85mm. Similar in focal length to the 50mm on crop.

But, back to the subject. I now have an Olympus OM-D and wouldn't swap it for anything (similar budget).

Why couldn't you sell your camera and lenses? They always sell on ebay.

All depends what you want to use it for. The 1.8 to 2.8 difference may be what you want in which case the 50 is better.

When I bought my 50mm, I sold it on quickly. Great value lens, but rarely used it because I wanted something wider as I was looking for a 'general' lens, so went for the 30mm and that stays on my body almost all the time now!

I like my fifty as I don't have any other lens like it, but given the choice (and extra money) I'd probably go for a 35mm on my 600D. Chris-red's just made the same transition to 35mm, he could give you a decent opinion on it if he's had a chance to play with it yet

I'm also not a fan of the 50mm on a 1.6 crop. Sure, it's great for portraits, but he didn't say he was shooting portraits. It's far from a great all-round lens on a crop. Since your budget is so limited, I guess you don't have many options out there. For £60 used, it's about your only option since I assume the only reason you'd want it is for the option to go down to f1.8.

With eBay I was just so against the fact that they would charge me so much I fees, but I guess I can't have it every way. A small audience on gumtree and no fees or a large audience and high fees.
I really liked the OMD though and it certainly was a step up from the 550d!

I think I probably will buy another 50 again, despite it being to long at times I did find it the perfect length at other times. And it was really the lens that I used in low light as the 550d's ISO performance was mediocre at best, so that puts the 40mm out.
The 28 and 35 are probably more than I want to spend at the moment, but perhaps in the future they may pair nicely with the 50 for a lightweight kit.
