Sold his RX100 in favour of a LX7

I sold my RX100 for a Canon G15 and much prefer it.

that's an old thread though & at least 2 of his main gripes have been addressed in the RX100 II.

I have an RX100 but considered the LX7 and a few others (Fuji XF1, another Panasonic with a tiny evf - can't remember the model, Canon S110 etc) .

They all seemed good in their own way but I liked the bigger sensor in the RX100 and my main priority after image quality was that the camera fits in a shirt pocket so I can have it with me almost everywhere I go. The LX7 was too big for that (otherwise I might have gone for one). But I also have an old Nex, so I am familiar with Sony menus and features like hand held twilight, panoramas, anti-motion blur etc.

The complaints in that link are valid (and some are addressed in the RX100ii but that is almost double the price). The 'macro' is not the best but you don't need to choose 'macro mode' you just use it at the widest focal length and f1.8 as close as you can get to the subject (about 5cm?) and it works fine apart from occasional mis-focus. Not bothered about neck strap attachments or a hot-shoe and an evf would be nice but an add on one would be too expensive and too much hassle and a built in one would either mean the camera would be too big or the evf would be awful like the little Panasonic one - so I can live without that.

By the way the built-in flash works quite well when pulled back and bounced indoors and outdoors you can even use the flash at a shutter speed of 1/2000 should you wish to. :) You can also use the pop-up on the RX100 to trigger a slave eg a cheap Yungnuo flash with two slave modes S1 and S2 (to ignore the pre-flash) although that of course means you have to carry a massive flash around along with a tiny camera. :)

But if I want to get serious about flash photography or macro I have a dslr for that.

This guy went from an LX5 to an RX100 and seems happy enough: http://thelightweightphotographer.com/tag/rx100/

Due to major back problems, I've downsized considerably and use an LX7 with a VF2 viewfinder for all my holiday/casual snaps. Results viewed on a 27 inch mac or printed to A4 are extremely good.

One thing the LX7 has is an utterly superb edge-to-edge sharp lens! Have read criticisms of the Sony lens.

I have a friend who is a geology/botany nut and finds his LX7 brilliant for all close-up work without a flash.

Thank you! It's all in DigitalRev's hands at the moment. We'll see what happens.
Off topic, hope no-one minds!, but wish I were in Spain right now as cold rain is hammering down in sunny Lancashire!

Still think don't do it!

The Sony RX100 II and Lumix LX7 are each the top of their manufacturer's range in the truly pocket-size compacts. I have no doubt that each company recognises that and are out to beat their rival.

Both are clearly very good quality cameras but which is the 'best'? - I think the best is the one which suits you the best. Here's a comparison....

For me, the 'best' of the two is the RX100 II - The slightly smaller size (exactly the same size as my FinePix F500EXR which the RX100 II will replace) and the tilt LCD screen which is also higher quality, plus a tilt flash, are main features which appeal to me more for the photography I do. I carry a compact in a pouch on my trousers belt ALL the time, even now as I write this.

The best way to decide before buying must be to have a 'test drive'.
