Hi,

What are people's thoughts on using photo software. I don't have Photoshop - bit pricey I think for my use.

May use Picasa but may try to stick with untouched photos?

for me to stick to untouched photos, i'd have to be about a million times better behind the camera :(

If you can't afford Photoshop CS, have a look at the cheaper packages, Adobe's Elements is cheaper.....as is paintshop pro
the gimp is free as far as I can remember.

Never used picasa though, so can't comment on it :(

I use Lightroom for inventory and I use the GIMP for more advanced stuff. I love the GIMP, haven't had any issues with it as of yet other than it doesn't recognize RAW files (but exporting from Lightroom anyway, so it doesn't really matter to me).

Using photo manipulation software increases your creativity. It doesn't mean that you can make a silk purse out of a sows ear. It enables you stretch your imagination. Changing small things like colour balance, or contrast, maybe increasing saturation slightly, can turn a good photograph into a great one.

Of course you have to start with a good photo in the first place.

I haven't use PSP for a long time, I'm sure it's a good program, but my choice for an inexpensive (relatively ) would be Elements. Simply because it's the little brother of what has become the industry standard. A understanding of Elements would help if you ever upgrade to Photoshop.

I use lightroom and photoshop cs3. Use lightroom a lot more than cs3 but there are a couple of features that lightroom cant perform which is where photoshop comes in. For a fairly cheap editing package you really cant go wrong with elements. I know quite a few people that use it and it looks great.
