Any recommendations for first time photo software? Something easy to use and compatible with a MacBook Air?

Hope this is the right section!

Thanks in advance

D

iPhoto. It handles RAW, it does most of the editing you could want, and is cheap through the app store (I think £10). It does your cataloging and your editing.

If you feel the need to have brushes and a few more editing options then just go straight to aperture for £50. You can download a trial of A3 for 30 days free and see if it is for you. There is a slight learning curve, but nowhere even close to photoshop.

On a side note, does your forum name correspond to fly fishing?

Thanks,
Rick

As above, iPhoto is a great place to start and comes pre installed.

Great thanks guys I already have iPhoto installed.

Yes Rick my username is based on my hobby and is the same on a couple of other forums.

Thanks again.

What are the thoughts about LR3 or LR4 on a 4GB macbook air?
Will the little fella be up to the job or will it be painfully slow etc? Thinking more in terms of PP RAW image manipulation rather than ordering/storing huge numbers of photos

Just taken delivery of a MBA today (yay!) and planning to put LR on it

I have no idea what you just said there...LR3? LR4? PP RAW? MBA?

I see I have a lot to learn :-(

LR = Lightroom. Serious photo managing and editing software package by Adobe. So LR3 = Lightroom v3, LR4 = LightRoom v4 (has literally just come out)

PP = post-processing {mucking around with photos to make them look better/worse/weirder}

RAW = highest detail image format from high quality cameras

MBA = macbook air

Try apples aperture from the app store, I think I only paid £30 for it and now use it more than LR and only resort to Photoshop if I am going to print.

apperture ok but lightroom is the daddy!!

No votes for Photoshop Elements? It's a cut-down version of the full Photoshop and is excellent for most image editing

Aperture without a doubt, your don't have to be a slave to Adobe you know :D

iPhoto is a VERY capable program if your just dipping your toes into the world of photography, just because it's free does not mean it's bad.

Aperture/Elements/Lightroom are all great, but as a new comer to editingI wouldn't spend any money on them until you have reached the limitations of iPhoto. The basics from iPhoto will carry over to the more advanced software but will be easier to pick up in iPhoto.

Thanks guys...plenty of food for thought there. Think the consensus is to to stick to iPhoto until I find my feet.

Thanks all

D

I think you should stick with Iphoto for a while, and then start to try others.I have a macbook and use photomechanic and then elements 10,and only on the odd occasion cs5.Your macbook air should be powerfull enough to do any type of editing as long as you are not running to many apps at the same time

thanks for the great info and suggestions folks - appreciate them
:clap:
