Hi all.

I'm looking into studio lighting and found a few kits. I have worked out what i want just unsure what kit to get. I have 3 choices.

  1. 2 lights both with umbrellas
  2. 2 lights both with softboxes
  3. 2 lights 1 with umbrella 1 with softbox

Just a quick question if i may to help me decide

What is the diffrence between a Reflective Umbrella and a softbox?

Softbox has the ability to add a diffusion panel (or two depending on make/model/size) and a grid to control spill

Thanks for your reply it's very much appreciated

So they have the same effect but the softbox focuses more light onto a subject?

So for a small room where light control is important a softbox would be better than an umbrella?

Really depends on what softbox you're looking at, but no a softbox won't focus more light onto a subject.

A regular softbox set up, vs a traditional umbrella, will give you the ability to diffuse the light, as the light from the source passes through the diffusion material it scatters, as a result you will get a less specular light with less abrupt fall off.

The addition of a grid will control spill

What do the various light shaping tools do? in the Lencarta learning centre answers your question but basically...

A shoot through umbrella can be placed close to the subject so can create soft light, but light spills everywhere, reducing lighting control and often creating flare
a Reflective umbrella creates a more focused light, but it isn't as soft because it can't be placed as close the subject (because the flash head is between the subject and the umbrella
A softbox combines the best of both worlds. The light is diffused, it can be placed as close as you like to the subject and it doesn't spill where it isn't wanted

That Lencarta link is superb. Cheers for the link. I'm in a similar boat and just learning how the different flash set-ups work, so this is really helpful.

Cheers
Gareth
