softbox question

cos softboxes give an even coverage a single layer of difuser 'could' lead to hotspots, some softboxes have the flash facing backwards to smooth the light out even more.

umbrellas are cheap portable and light

So that's why they give a better light than umberellas, not just the smooth, flat surface without spokey thingys?

that too, you can get spoke shadows (this is shoot through brollies im talking about) also softboxes have very defined edges and are controllable - brollies are v uncontrollable as they throw light everywhere

sorry for hijacking this thread....
So soft boxes are better but umbrellas are lighter/easier to carry while out, right ?

In a way, yes. And you could say that shoot through umbrellas are a poor mans' softbox, but umbrellas do have their uses. See this article

nor me, would be interested to see an example though.

the big advantages to me of shoot through umbrellas compared to softboxes are the cost and the set up time. umbrellas are fantastic paired with flashguns.

I'm a tard I got turned around in my head, I meant the slight shadow you can get from the leading edge of aa reflective umbrella on the floor when shooting wide and close ish

sorry guys :S
