Why do softboxes have 2 layers of white material? And why, in comparison, does an umberella only have 1? :shrug:
So that's why they give a better light than umberellas, not just the smooth, flat surface without spokey thingys?

In a way, yes. And you could say that shoot through umbrellas are a poor mans' softbox, but umbrellas do have their uses. See this articlesorry for hijacking this thread....
So soft boxes are better but umbrellas are lighter/easier to carry while out, right ?

nor me, would be interested to see an example though.
the big advantages to me of shoot through umbrellas compared to softboxes are the cost and the set up time. umbrellas are fantastic paired with flashguns.
