There was me looking forward to getting back home tomorrow to my good lady wife after 2 weeks away and what happens ?

A sodding volcano erupts in Iceland and all flights to the UK are cancelled and I'm left stuck in Chennai until Monday according to Emirates. :(

And I'm here to tell you that from Norfolk and Suffolk, the magic cloud has not been conspicuous by its presence. It's hard to see what all the fuss was about. Wrong kind of cloud? Whatever-bloomin'-next!!

Due to go to Milan/Bergamo tomorrow for four days - my lovely family paid for a long weekend to Italy for my 64th Birthday. Was going to visit the POW camps that my Dad was in during WW2. He was in the 1st Special Air Service and was captured in N. Africa 800 miles behind enemy lines. He was transported to Sicily and was in several transit camps and eventually ended up in "Campo 62" Bergamo, quite a notorious POW camp. All the POW's were treated very badly, and many Italian anti-facists were tortured or executed by the Germans after the Italian capitulation.

He escaped and was helped by a priest who hid him in the Belfry of the "Duomo" Milan. He eventually made it into Switzerland and there interned. After months of research I found all this out and was going to visit the places he passed through.

Might get a refund on the flights, but the most expensive bit, the hotel, is not covered under our insurance.

b****r!

I can't decide whether what I can see is the infamous cloud or just the usual, we have been having some spectacular sunsets for a few weeks on and off. Feel for anyone trying to travel but I would rather miss a holiday or whatever than risk not getting there.

The cloud isn't at ground level, it's microscopic particles of ash in the stratosphere according to the news today, gets sucked into the engines, melts then solidifies on the innards clogging it up.

I'm amazed how many grumpy people there have been on the radio today, what would they prefer, to fall from the sky in a flaming fireball or wait 24 hours :D

Is it possible to "de-merge" it Gary?

If anyone has seen the program "seconds from disaster" in which a 747 unknowingly flies through a cloud of volcanic ash, then they will totally understand the reason behind the blanket flight ban in and out of UK.

Haven't but thanks for the heads-up.

While safety seems to be at the heart of this, its probably caused just as much if not more disruption as the threatened BA staff walk out. Convenient and massively inconvenient.

It's not just BA is it? Surely the airline bean counters would not allow their safety elfs to stop flights if they didn't believe it was dangerous, they don't like losing money and they don't like to upset their customers.

Sometimes Mother nature flexes her muscles and we have to respect that...

And there I was thinking the world would come to an end after watching films depicting Aliens firing lasers down on us or some asteroid the size of England heading our way at breakneck speed  What a crock of ****!! A bit of smoke and we are doomed  there were even people phoning in the radio station concerned they would not recieve a signal for their DAB radio`s. I would be more concerned about getting down to Tesco`s before it got dark.

We aint seen nothing yet, the best is still to come :D

Does this mean that because of the massive amount of CO² produced by the volcano, we all have to ground our cars, shut down coal fired power stations, no patio heaters and close down industry (whats left) to save the planet from global warming ?

And that is a whole new debate isn't it?

Weather patterns have been around for many thousands of years, driving your Ford Focus ( or whatever is your choice od wheels) is really unlikely to have a big effect on the inevitable in my humnble opinion.

I know a few people meant to be flying as well, but seems it will be at least midday Saturday now before that can happen...

See what happens when you respect Planet Earth for one hour [Earth Hour 2 weeks ago?]

She throws a fit! Either that or the Icelanders are having a vengeful moment over Cod Quotas.

my flight was rescheduled from yesterday to tomorrow lunch time.. i cant see it happening tbh, but you never know.
been dying to see my wife and 3 month old baby. miss them like crazy.
but hey ho

It's not really a volcano, it's Icelandic bankers destroying the evidence :)

A guy I work with is/was due to fly to Spain on Saturday for a week of lads golfing, his wife will be very happy but he's a mite miffed.

I liked the comment on the radio yesterday "Thank you very much, Iceland, bt actually it was CASH that you owed us, not ASH" :)

Working today in customer services for all the cancelled holidays, everything cancelled today :( Lots of unhappy customers! Good that we are offering full refunds though :)

Well I'm still in sunny and very hot Chennai, still no idea when we're going to leave our company have told us to reserve the hotel rooms until Wednesday.

It could be a lot worse I'm in a very nice hotel (with free wifi) with some workmates for company and we're going to watch the footy later. I could be one of the poor sods sleeping on an airport floor somewhere.

Mind you if I don't get home soon the wife is threatening to go on a shopping spree as punishment.

Oh well off to have a dip in the rooftop swimming pool.

first flight cancelled thurs,
second flight cancelled today
now i'm booked in again for this thursday. lets hope this one works out
the missus aint too happy i wont be there for her birthday, but i'm sure i'll make up for it somehow.

I fly down from Edinburgh to Heathrow Mon - Thur every week, glad I made the call to leave London driving on Thursday, stayed in Manchester Thursday night before getting back on Friday or I think I'd be still in London now.

Train booked for 07:00 tommorrow morning - Edin - Kings Cross, I can imagine its going to be a nightmare!

It's got a damned silly name too.

Eyjafjallajokull (ay-yah-FYAH'-plah-yer-kuh-duhl

Well, the latest is. The ash cloud extends from 4000ft up. Aircraft that have flown have suffered sevre engine damage. Just a case of sitting and waiting. From an air traffic point of view getting everything moving again is a big job. From an airline/airport logistics view it is a HUGE HUGE job. A very very complex and worrying situation if it goes on for too long.

Well the latest from Emirates (customer service rating from me -10, they are useless) is that the earliest they can fly me to Glasgow is the 27th, next Tuesday.

They asked if I'd consider Manchester instead and I said yes, but the earliest flight there is the 28th

Could be worse my colleague is supposed to fly to Cuba on holiday on the
28th and he's stuck here with me.

Well if all goes according to plan I should be back in Glasgow airport by lunchtime on Saturday, hopefully to be met by much missed better half. :woot:

Only 8 days later than I should have been back though :(
