Bought a mint 17-85 IS USM off here and Royal Mail have used it as a football !!! , well packaged but they still managed to push the lens cap into the filter and smash it :bang: , thankfully the only damage is to the filter and a claim i going to be put in for it , still sodding annoying though

any one know why my thread is here when i posted it in Out Of Focus :cuckoo:

Make sure you throughly test the lens before the claim. Just because the visable damage is only the filter, who knows whats gone wrong on the inside, especially with the delicate IS system.

Good call, I would be very concerned to receive a lens like that, especially if it had been well packed.

Without wanting to be negative (and I hope your claim is OK), but I'd be surprised if there wasn't a list somewhere in Royal Mail of things you can't claim for and "Glass" would be right up near the top on there.

have given the lens a good play with and all seems fine thankfully , had a look at a 58mm filter and cap and i reckon it would take very little in the way of a hit to smash a filter with the cap on

Do not use Royal Mail. They are a bunch of idiots.

My local postie takes it on himself to leave any packets in the dustbin if we are out. three formal complaints and they still do it in spite of two packages getting collected on dustbin day and now (presumably) being somewhere under the local tip.

Service is atrocious and the sooner they get a good shake up, the better.

Jeez, talk about tarring everyone with the same brush:shake:

Because your local postman is an idiot as you say does not mean the the whole organisation is atrocious.:shake:

I get excellent service from my postman who "goes the extra mile" to make sure I get my mail and parcels safely.

You will surely be calling at least one member on here an idiot!!.

Well from my experience with the Royal Mail you must be the lucky one. After waiting over a week for my prints from DSCL I put a complaint call into Royal Mail as five parcels were delayed more than a week, all sent 1st class (thats a joke). Within an hour at 3.30pm a package arrived. The next day another package was delivered but looked like it had been ripped open to look inside. I am still waiting three weeks for another and a claim has been sent in by the sender. It seems the only way to guarantee post delivery is by recorded mail these days. Funny how the endless mailshots always seem to be delivered without a problem.

My guideline for adequate packing of a lens is double boxed with 10 to 30cm (depending on weight) of good quality void fill. I've had a lens with similar damage, sent by ParcelForce and packed in a jiffybag with a wrap of newspaper!

:plusone:

I introduced myself to my postie when i moved into the farm
common courtesy = no problems at all

leaves RMSD parcels in toolshed as agreed
so I get them, and he doesn't have to form-fill at the depot

2-way street..................

I had a problem with a stand-in postman once, he left an Amazon package outside the porch door. I complained and the local manager came round, inspected the door and had a chat with me. No problems since.

They won't pay out if the packaging was inadequate. And if something has broken, then the packaging was inadequate. By definition.

Me too:D

Up until two years ago, Royal Mail (a.k.a The Pony Express) would often leave parcels outside my door with no signature when they needed signing for. On two occasions I purchased Nikon lenses from Amazon, both turned up broken with footprint marks on the boxes.

Things seem to have changed now, I just hope it stays that way!

its in the hands of the seller so time will tell i suppose :)

Is it?
I thought you were processing the claim.
Ok..will get on it.

i thought you were , ok then , get on with it  , i will keep the packaging , save me a PM , feedback if you please ;)

The other half had a no rubble payout from RM when an ornament with an obscene amount of packaging arrived in 3 bits. They ask you to send the item and packaging for the claim.

Personally I've never had RM problems.. couriers on the other hand..

I have no problem with my Postie or the temp when the normal one is on holiday. They go out of their way to deliver my stuff to me. My UPS courier even drops my parcels into my office if I am not home when he calls.

Might be something to do with the fact that I always give them a decent Christmas tip.

I have had several RM items left in the green recycling box outside our front gate on a Friday..Collection day.. They must know that the boxes are out the front of the garden because they are being collected, my front garden is 10 foot long, so its not like its there because there is no where else to keep it. Surely the big black wheelie bin beside it gives the game away too.

I have also had items delivered to completely the wrong house, on the wrong street, in the wrong town. Despite my address being on the front.

And a special delivery item left on the door step in full view of everyone.

They may not all be bad, but most I have come accross are.

Jeez, talk about tarring everyone with the same brush:shake:

On the Jeremy Vine show on Radio 2 today, they were discussing the regular theft of money from birthday cards and whole packages going missing - seems like there may be good reason for tarring the whole organisation with the same brush.

In my town a few years ago 2 foreign workers were caught after mail regularly going missing, they would meet up on a quiet path and empty the contents, take what they wanted and dump the rest.

Xmas temps for the post office - what a joke! In my job I have seen some of the people the PO employ for temp xmas jobs, and I feel their selection process leaves a lot to be deisred - they have definately employed less than savoury characters.

I am sure not all are bad, but the PO needs to get its act together, of course we should ensure against breakages, but not expect this to have to cover theft too by PO employees too.

Ok was gonna stay out of this but I find the insinuation in that remark quite offensive, as an RM employee I have never differtiated between those who tip and those who don't.
I have some lovely customers who never tip but they treat me with respect all year round and others who think because they do they have a right to be abusive and expect me to break the rules, just guess who gets the better service ?

Erm... If you don't differentiate then surely no-one does? ;) :exit:

Ok if you want to be pedantic, I don't differentiate between those that tip and those that don't, butI do give customers who treat me with respect all year round more consideration though

I've never even seen my postie! The stuff gets delivered okay, usually within a 20 mile radius of the address on the letter / parcel .... near enough :D
