Socket 1156 Motherboard - Where can I get one ?

Yes
In my attempt to install a newer graphics card in my PC I seem to have managed to wreck various bits of my motherboard, it refuses to admit my SATA drives exist unless I run it in IDE Legacy mode and the network adapter appears to have gone AWOL.

So I've been attempting to source another MB and as I have found before ATX socket 1156, not 1155, boards are as rare as hen's teeth.

I've tried the usual suppliers like Scan/Novatech/CCL with no luck, there are some 2nd hand ones on EBay but I was wondering if anybody had any other suppliers that they know of that might stock these motherboards.

I'd rather not have to buy a new CPU as well as a motherboard.

Have you tried reloading the drivers for your motherboard?

Have you taken the graphics card out and tried again? Does it boot now? Does the new card require power direct to the board? Personally, I'd suspect a PSU issue there (either poor quality PSU causing issues or the graphics card trying to draw too much power through the PCIe bus).

Keith, Yes I've reloaded the drivers, or at least the ones that will load as the ones for the network adapter won't install as it claims that there is no adapter and the Gigabyte website is somewhat lacking in information/support for the MB.

Andy, The first thing I did on failure was put the old graphics card back and it makes no difference, the only way to get the machine to boot from my HDD is to set the SATA Native Mode in the BIOS to IDE Legacy. Without this set I couldn't even install W7 to an empty SATA drive, it just complained about possibly needing drivers installed or recognise my SATA DVD, it did allow me to restore the W7 image from my other dive but wouldn't boot from it. With IDE Legacy set it boots quite happily.

Both cards require power directly to them, the main difference the 'new' one, a GTX460, requires 2 power feeds, that shouldn't be an issue as there are 2 PCI-Express feeds running from the PSU. According to the box the card needs 450W/12V/24A the Silverstone PSU is rated at 560W/12V/32A

that only leaves 110W for everything else , and that assumes the PSU is operating fully efficiently which it probably isn't

I'm far from an expert, but I'd still suspect a power issue (I'm sure I saw a thing in micro mart that suggested that the minimum PSU recomended was 1.5x the total power demand of the system)

You may have blown something in the PSU.... IU had a problem recently where a couple of USB ports didn't work, but the system booted fine. Was a broken PSU.........

You'd be lucky to find a new 1156 board around these days, they haven't been made in a couple of years and they're now 4 generations old (sandy bridge, ivy bridge and haswell have all come since socket 1156). Your best bet would be to try with a used one if you don't have any luck with your current board.

Also don't start to think that the graphics card is using 450w by itself, the suggestion on the box is that your *whole system* requires at least a decent 450W PSU if you're using that graphics card. If you look at this review: http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/graphics/2010/07/12/nvidia-geforce-gtx-460-graphics-card-review/11 you'll see the entire system with a GTX460 actually uses less than 300W. I've been building PCs for years and I know that many people seriously overestimate PSU requirements due to the amount of misinformation floating around.

Whilst this is true, a lot of cheap PSUs seriously overestimate their ability to deliver what they say on their case....

The PSU that blew in my system was a £100 450W PSU (Silverstone Nightjar) and it was powering an Atom based system with a single SSD. Probably no more than 30W in total....

Smugly taps all his £20 PSU's still going strong after a decade or so;)

I wonder if they will outlast that power station I put in my last sooper dooper PC?

In the case of the Silverstone I'm guessing you were just pretty unlucky, they're not known for 'blowing up'. And that's also why I state 'decent PSU' and not just 'PSU' as the generic/unknown brand ones I don't trust to deliver their stated power.

Thanks for the replies and information folks.

I know the 1156 is an 'old' fitting but was living in hope someone might know of a stockist of new boards.:( Oh well looks like it's EBay for a 2nd hand board or a build/buy a new system, even the case is so old that I can't fit the current style of PSU in it.

Anyway the situation is that the PC boots quite happily if I leave the SATA controller setting at IDE Legacy and runs fine with the 'new' GTX 460 in it, so goodness knows what I've done to the MB. Anyway hopefully a new network card will get me on the net and I can decide what to upgrade to.

I'm sorry.. I can't hear you tapping over the noise of the fans ;) :p

Yeah.. or the fact it was a 450W powering an HTPC drawing a few tens of watts meant it was operating at the wrong end of its comfort zone. I posted more in irony rather than any other reason. :D

Or the Ching, Ching of the folk at the bank!

Absolutely no need for a Rolls on the school run

Or indeed for this forum making me indulge in a bleedin power station for my PC!

Alistair I am pretty certain I have an old foxcon 1156 mobo sat around I could send you if needed?

Let me know and I will check I still have it and all the bits
