I am about to undertake a project, I will be shooting a Social Documentry in RHYL, this is part of its regeneration, and im the only photographer to be doing this, seriously anyway.
I think I have a pretty well known photographer to write the forward for me, it will be personally published, and I think a local gallery will exibit, if its strong enough, and it be part of my submission for my degree.
I have a little experience with this, and Im aware this wont be something that a lot of people have done, however, if anyone has undertaken this kind of essay before, any tips would be welcome.
I will be shooting the whole series in b&w, 35mm using a Leica R4, I expect to be shooting around about 1500/2500 frames within a 7 weeks period, this will be the body of work for initial submission, however I expect the project to continue for a year or so.

I visited Rhyl last spring and must admit that it looked very much in need of regeneration:)

I can imagine that there will be massive scope for your project. Shooting in BW will bring out the most of the many opportunities/subjects.
 
I think Pete Carr might be the person to talk to. He has some experience of documenting the regeneration of Liverpool over the past x number of years :)

I used to visit Rhyl every year as a small child.
Then it got a bit run down and they re did it up - and it lost its magic....
Lets hope this time around they can get it back....

Or bring back the paddling pool - open aired one - on the front I say!

Some yeah, unfortunately I seem to lack the ability to be honest. So I wait for great light and do dramatic pictures of things I think look amazing. However, I should really try and be a bit more honest. A friend of mine has done some documentary work in Rhyl.
 
Yes, I was going to recommend looking at Mark's work. Recently the funfair closed down in Rhyl (as I'm sure you know if you live there), so that could be a good starting point.
 
Lee, not sure about the area, not familiar with it, but if you are going to be spending some time there, you should make a point of talking to the locals and telling them what you are doing, they will in turn tell you things about the area, places that might be of interest Photographically. You will find that a lot of people will send their kids out to play for a 'nose' around, and becasue you have spoken to a few locals, Im sure they wont mind you snapping away at their kids while they are just 'playing' in their environment, In Monochrome, it would certainly look very dramatic. I did a Documentary on a few families of Irish Travellers last year, cost me a few quid ( the kids came out and asked for some cash!) and for the three days I was there I took plenty of treats, once they got used to me, and took what I had to offer, they pretty much ignored me and let me get on with doing what I wanted to do, which was Photographing them, their parents, and their habitats.
