vege|tar¦ian
Ancient tri¦bal word for the idiot that cant hunt fish or light a fire.

Did the butchers email you on holiday?
If that was aimed at me, it was well before PC's Mobile phones, in fact you were lucky to have a even a Land line ;)

My Saturday job was working in an old fashioned ( proper) butchers, I think I can still remember how to joint a Lamb, Llama, so a decent family sized one should do it (y)

Butcher it? Nah! Skin it and gut it while leaving head on and "exit" intact (gut through the belly without disturbing the disturbing bit) then shove the spit all the way through, using wire to hold the carcass on as it's turning. Send all mail to nodonolibob@spoofmail.con

FFS people, is it really necessary for *every* thread to end up talking about eating llamas? How about we get a mod - @Cobra? - to hive them all off into a separate thread?

Calm down.
It'll pass soon (after he's been devoured ;) )

On emails you just have to find what works for you. My history of taming(?) the beast/ urge/ need to check is as follows

When I headed up a consultancy office I used to check my emails on holiday, phone in to my secretary every couple of days as I could delegate/ pass on stuff that meant things were being done which meant I didn't come back from my relaxing holiday to a non relaxing stack of urgent things to be addressed.

As email traffic rose significantly and there was just to much fluff and c**p from people who think that an email from them is a requirement to drop everything else as they hadn't organised themselves better earlier and it was becoming more stressful wading through to find the real important stuff, then I had our IT guy set me up with a second email business account that was known only to my secretary and my fellow directors. Switched off the main email address and kept the phone switched off most of the time. My secretary used to check all my emails, forward on or address what could be done but if something came in which was urgent and only i could really address or advise on then she would email that to me and I'd send her back a response to go out or get delegated and I'd check for voice messages every couple of days. Again I didn't come back to a non relaxing stack of emails and I knew that someone I trusted had been through them all and kept aside the non urgent ones that only i could deal with. Everything else could be ignored as I'd get the updates from staff as we did the project catch ups

Having given that life up a few years ago, I now provide my a combination of contract consultancy to another company and direct consultancy. For the contract consultancy- when I go on holiday I do a handover and then leave their phone and laptop at home for the duration- they're big boys and can deal with most crises directly but they have my direct consultancy phone number if they really need to speak to me- hasn't been abused yet. I still take my direct consltancy business phone and laptop away with me as that's something that a direct consultancy client might need a bit of advice on at short notice. With the out of office on most leave it till i return but occassionally they need to talk and we sort it out.

If I'm somewhere hot them most of the work is done mid afternoon when it's too hot for me to sit outside with a beer beside me and it doesn't feel like work.

So the answer for me is yes but I've had to find a way to make sure it's balanced on my side to ensure that only the urgent important stuff gets through.

Well played sir.

I can't access anything to do with work when I'm not there - what a shame.................
I don't have anyone working for me - when I'm away everything stops - the company's choice, not mine.
Having been away for a week I expect to spend at least two days next week going through last week's emails binning the c**p and deciding what to answer (or not). Answering will waste another couple of days. So by the following week my section might be back on track. Or not.
A couple of the guys have my mobile number but they'd never dare use it...................
My leave is my own time. Anyway, it's a bit hard to do the work I do while in the middle of Dartmoor or up a mountian.
My partner has a company Blackberry but it usually gets 'accidently' left on the dining table when he's away..............

I never answer my phone if its work. they can chat to me in work. when I worked in a lab it was different as I actually enjoy that and don't mind chatting about.
