So who checks work email on hols

Got to admit I was pretty good?/bad and always checking when on rest day or hols and found people expected a response even if they knew you were off. Anyway new IT system introduced and bit of a faff to register/check emails at home so a few of us at work decided not to bother. Consensus is 100% best decision made, I ,like many others I siuspect, thought I should check and respond to emails at all times in case they noticed I was not essential to the business:):eek:
On hol now and thinking of the number of emails to go through on return, maybe next step is the ? system , had a few wines and can not bother to google, of out of office saying all email will be deleted and resend if important on x date when returned to work.
 
The whole point of a holiday is to take a break from work. Why anyone would check work emails is beyond me :rolleyes: Can understand for someone who runs their own business, but anyone else, definitely not!

I love the feeling, when you're on holiday and you forget what day it is :D

I think it also depends on your position and current projects etc but generally I don't bother or it's not a break
 
Depends what's happening when I leave on the last day.

I'd rather check later and make sure things are properly in hand than return to a s*** storm later.

I'd rather check and relax than not check and wonder.
 
Never checked when I was an employee, but feel obliged to check now and again as self-employed.
 
Can't pick up works e-mail away from work now - used to be able to and stopped it, as I was finding it difficult not to check...

What this man said. I can tell you that right now one of works ADSL for one of the vpn links is going up and down like a yoyo and that ill need to raise a fault first thing.

Although I was in Norway last month and my phone wouldn't work on their network, it was kinda nice.

When I'm on holiday I couldn't care less about work emails.
If it is important someone else can deal with it.

Besides, I can't remember the last time I had a holiday...

I agree with this statement but now it's except that I can be contacted 24/7 (e-mail/phone).
However, I was really nice last month when we went away for a week to a country house miles & miles away from anything.
This place was 5 star but had no telephone signal & it was great :)
When I did return to work, everyone wanted to know where I had been & why didn't I answer e-mail/phone.
I did explain that I had been away but they didn't like that answer o_O
 
Stopped a few years ago, the last thing I do now before I go on holiday is delete the work email accounts from my phone, tablet and laptop.

No work email on evenings or weekends either :/
 
I used to be online all the time but a couple of years ago I decided enough is enough, when I'm on holiday that's it I won't think about work let alone reply to an email.

This decision came about as my health was being adversely affected and I was losing family time which I'd never get back - no regrets at all tbh.
 
No. We have to have a week off without contact for anti fraud purposes

I run my own business and I don't check work emails when on holiday. I have competent staff who I trust to make the right decisions and who I support if they make wrong decisions. If there's a major flap they can call/text me, and I can usually access email remotely even if I choose not to - but so far the 'panic button' has never been needed.

My manager at work is, I`m told, a very good people person, but has not got a b clue with anything technical or procedural. Fair enough if things go belly up and you need to call someone- I do it myself and hate starting the conversation with "sorry to calll you but" but it got to the stage if I did not reply to an email on my day off I would get a call asking why I had not replied, b....cks to that I think. I do realise managers should manage and not get involved with nitty gritty stuff but got to draw a line somewhere
 
I only check if I've buggered off in the middle of a project I'm responsible for and I don't have total faith in my delegates. Self-preservation rather than duty! Even then, I limit it to once a week maximum, and don't do any work per se, just send polite chasers and - rarely - bollockings to remind people that they don't want me coming back to the office and finding they've failed to complete a simple task they said they could accomplish. :menacing:

Always! No, hang about, never. No, I mean, I'm always on 'holiday'....... Unless I'm answering a phone, email, text, FB post or msg, whatsApp or whatever.

Hey, I love my job. Or is it a holiday? Hell, I don't care :)
 
Being self employed in the last couple of years, I do check them when I am away on holiday (especially as I always seem to go on holiday right before a big project) but only reply to urgent ones.

However, when I was in full time employment - sod 'em!
 
Up to the individual end of the day, as long as its not expected for you to check emails

If you hate your job, and your boss is an arse, and work is just being productive, then you need your holiday. And are unlikely to want to check emails.
I enjoy the work I do. And I'm a knowledge holder.Meaning my colleagues need my help from time to time. So when I'm not there they could get stuck. It's all easy stuff for me so not a problem to answer the odd question. I tell them I have a huge brain. But in reality they are just thick.

It's hearses for curses.
 
Personal emails while on holiday, yes. Work related emails, never.

Irrelevant. We no longer live in that time.
I'd much rather check and then relax rather than wonder.
 
Yes. Like with the family. When I'm out somewhere enjoying myself, and no one in the family has sent me an SMS, I know everything is OK. Party on! No horrible surprises when I get home.
 
I did start threatening to take out grievances out against my duty managers at one point because I was getting regular phone calls asking me to come in and work on my days off. To add insult to injury, they refused to pay overtime rates (I only worked a 30 hour week, part time, for three shifts and you had to clear 48 hours before overtime rates were paid). These phone calls stopped after I actually carried out my threat and made a formal complaint against the worst offender when it happened to me on holiday.

I never gave them my email address, btw.
 
Mrs Nod does when we're in WiFi range but she's self employed so needs to be contactable should anything go boobies aloft. She also answers her (work) mobile which can be quite funny when the caller can't hear her over the "noise" of waves lapping on a shingle/pebble beach!

If those are the only two options, then yes. But the real question is why you feel the need to wonder if you're not checking. I don't.

Lot to be said about that.
I am sure if I had the time I could train my team appropriately & not have to be concerned what is going on. Unfortunately when you don't have time to spit, passing on your knolage comes lower down the list of things to do :(

An unfortunate word when it comes to llamas.
I'm self employed and work on my own. Not much point in emailing myself.
