So what is this ACTUALLY teaching them?

it takes a lot of effect to roll that wheel on the mouse, I fully understand.

About the same as tapping shift?
I post from a phone too. ;)

but I could still make sense of their papers.
Most aspects of maths still have to be learned
Curiously, when my daughter was preparing for her stats in middle school, (what ever year that was)
She was struggling quite badly.
I never even understood the maths equations, let along be able to show her how to work it out.

After a lot of reverse workings out, the way they were teaching them simple tasks like "long" division and "long" multiplication,
had me totally confused, a couple of quick examples of the "old ways" she never looked back and went on to do her "A"'s

They may be the same but they were not all shoe horned into the same, limiting curriculum as today's students are.
They certainly were when I was at skool, but then we were tort proper subjects like readin' rightin' and riffmatic ;)
And no calculators either ;)

Just give a thought to the server hamster rolling that bloody great wheel around 24/7 :D

Was this the Maths exam sat this year, whichever one its was in the 6th form? My son sat this as his first paper, was distraught after it, thought he'd fail it, didn't know or understand about 1/3rd of the paper. So many students (all top maths students) mentioned this and the staff took a look and struggled with the paper. I wouldn't be surprised if it was adjusted accordingly. This was the first of 3 exams needed for this qualification.

It was Higher Maths in Scotland.

Grovel before me, weaklings, your superior is amongst you. ;)
I dissected a Llama for my biology, I'm pretty sure I can still remember how to do it :p

I did similar to a snake.
Can't remember how now, but pretty sure I still have the handbag ;)

That would go with my shoes.
I'd look weird with a handbag though.

Edit. like minds...

And we had to cover our exercise books with wallpaper. Why?!

I can keep my man things in it, kind of like a sporran!

I use a little belt pouch for golf. I call it my golfing scrotum since I keep a couple of balls in it (along with things to rest them on as I'm driving and a glove...)

To show you were posh enough to have proper wall paper and not just anaglypta?

I did the feared Nuffield A-Level Physics. Grovel before me, weaklings, your superior is amongst you. ;)
What's an A level? I left school with O-Levels, skipped the A-Levels, and did my HNC and HND during my apprenticeship. Couldn't be bothered going on to a degree, 5yrs of college tagged on after school was more than enough for me.

Call it your "man bag" :)
A lot of 13-15yr old boys seem to have little "man bags" now. I've never seen anything look so wrong in my life. Hell if you'd had something like that when I was a kid, you'd not be using one for long, they deserve to be ridiculed. Even my two sons laugh at them.

What charming children you're raising

Better that the kids realise it now, rather than let it go on too long.
I mean really! This bag is slightly larger than some I see. I'm even tempted to lower the car windows and shout something out as I drive passed. :)

Add to this that they are wearing skinny jeans so tight they can't pull them right up and the arse of the jeans is baggy and looks like they've messed their nappy.

They need something to keep all their knives and drugs in. [/Daily Mail]

I prefer a little off the hip number in leather (of course)

Walk around with a bag like that, they'd have to be stoned/ They're going to need the knives to fend off the abuse they're going to get for having the bag in the first place. ;)

They get given a list of formulae, really? We had to learn them as well. As for the questions, it's been 36yrs since I did any maths like that, never needed to use anything like it since neither and I've worked in mechanical engineering for that 36yrs.

How many of you can do it? I've had a look. I could attempt some. I probably couldn't complete the paper. I did maths to GCSE and did science A-levels.
Baring in mind its a lot of years that I have done anything like that, probably not too many,
however I've not just spent the last 12 years of my life at school preparing for said exam ;)

And that's the point.
We all learned useless crap at school, but the only mission then was to pass the exam.
The useful stuff comes later when you decide what you want to do lol

The whole system is cocked up

My friends son has been offered courses at 2 universites even if he only gets E grades

That's not what university is about, that's we want your £9,000

Exactly.
Places to fill and who cares if you're not good enough? Sad.

It's been a clever plan from the start, there's no jobs for the youth of Britain so we'll convince them they can all have high ranking office jobs, we'll keep them off benefits until they're 21 by keeping them in education, then in 20 years time all that money we saved by not paying out benefits will come back slowly when they start earring above the repayment threshold

We'll start with the 18-21 bracket then when it's up and running we'll make all the kids stay at school until they're 18 at their parents expense so they feel confident to do their degree in plug wiring

3 years for live and neutral, 4 if there's an earth fitted with a post grad in pat testing

Are you sure it was a University?

There are Universities and ... learning establishments.
