So what do you think caused this?

Out photographing the L'Eroica Britannia in Derbyshire last week (thread HERE) and there were a couple of vintage cars seen on the route of the cycle race ... I took a series of photos of one of them but when processing them I noticed a magenta mark showing on the windscreen, almost like a case of flare.
I was using a Nikon 70-200 f2.8 VRII with hood and that lens is not know for flare issues, coupled with the fact that at 2:30pm the weak sun was high in the sky and slightly behind the car, (as can be seen from the shadow), so I don't think it had anything to do with my equipment.

At the time the shots were taken the road was empty in front of the car, except for me standing on the verge, and there was nothing forming the road or the boundary to the road that was reflective, simply dry-stone wall and vegetation.

As the car moves toward me the mark moves from a large one across the passenger side windscreen to a small one over the driver's side.
My best guess is a reflection off of the car itself, possibly the rear of a headlamp ... or one of the mirrors?
What do you think would have caused this magenta mark?

(PS Anyone else reminded of the actor Robert Hardy when looking at the passenger? :D )

it looks like the reflection of a person - were you wearing a blue or purple top?

i just noticed something in the second image of the above 3. look at the very centre of the steering wheel. in the part of the reflection. it looks like a small horizontal zip ( almost like the pocket of a camera bag. plus the purple blob isnt round, its more a rounded rectangle and has a lighter greyish bit above it ( almost like a carry handle.
i think by looking for purple coloured reflected objects is whats misleading, the object could be a black colour but due to the light/ reflection/ WB its turned the object that purplish colour. , theres def something else reflected above the purple blob which would further indicate something to the right being reflected but as i cant zoom in its hard to tell

Nothing blue with me at all.

I suppose it's some kind of polarising or refraction from the glass treatment?
Could be but would it appear to move like that?

Here's a zoomed view.

ok if you look above the steering wheel directly above the purple splodge theres a whitish uneven curved line. also the purple blob changes in size to match the drystone wall reflected. so my guess is someone was standing over to your right and its there reflection ( notice in image 3 that the reflection is more a grey colour outside the steering wheel ( around the 9 to 11 oclock postion above the steering wheel . you can see where the driver is waving the hes hand is almost grey and has that exact same curved shaped as image 2 ( i would say this is a persons head outline. ) and the pruple is just a result of WB, and reflection angle causing it to turn purple rather than actually be purple on the reflected object.
also not there are cyclists behind. was there one in front of the car too or stopped off to your right as the whitish / grey curved bit above the purple looks similar in shape to the rear cyclists helmet.

Looks very much like a headup display. A very modern piece of kit for such an old looking car. I think on the back window maybe that's the projector certainly some kind of camera. The display monitors the journey
and projects a map onto the screen. A very posh version of satnav.

You've cracked it Dean ... looking more closely I can see that the reflection is of a purple coat and a silver helmet ... there was nothing in close in front of the car when it turned into the road but searching through the images there is this lady up ahead...

Obviously whilst she was not literally in front of the car when he entered the road, as the car increased speed above the speed of the cyclist, her reflection became more prominent in the windscreen!

Well done Dean :)

*coughs* um, I think I spotted it first grandpa :p

gotta blow me own trumpet like

And I was going to say it was the ghost of old Mr. Jenkins, once the janitor of the old mansion house nearby. "He be appearin' in photographs taken around them parts for nigh on hundred years, truth be told."

Just scrolled down as far as the pictures and was going to be all smug and say "I'll bet there was someone in front with a purple jacket and silver helmet."
I feel as thought he wind has been taken out of my sails. :(
