Yes
I just cant decide if i bother taking the 60d and one lens... or just 'enjoy' the day and take my 220hs point and shoot... (which has a longer zoom anyway) what are you planing on taking in ?

This is a good question. I was at Hampden for the football yesterday and have tickets for 5 other events in London next week. I had planned on just taking my Nikon D3100 with my 35mm lens. My reasoning being that I won't be in a position to get any decent shots of the action so would concentrate on 'atmosphere' shots. However I did find it really restrictive yesterday, either not long enough or not wide enough. The main restriction that I felt was that in a crowded stadium environment 'zooming with my feet' wasn't really an option.

I'm now considering swapping the 35mm for my Tamron 17-55 to give me a bit more freedom although it does weigh a lot more. Alternatively I might just leave the dslr and take a compact. Decisions decisions!

just what i thought - we are going to travel all around london... see the sites and then take in the games so im thinking a compact is the way to go ! its got more of a zoom on it too!

It really is tricky! I was def going to take my D7000 with 55-200 and 17-50 for the water polo AND take compact for every other shot I could imagine. However, we will be in London for the full day and (hopefully) partying well into the night. Not sure I want to have to look after my kit for the full day, especially security and weight wise. Think it might just take my Nikon P300, 2 batteries and some SD cards and relax and enjoy. Wish I was there last night though!

I've just managed to get my hands on a Canaon SX220 HS to use at the Olympics. The experience I had at Hampden put me off taking my dslr so decided to get a nice little compact with manual controls and a decent zoom. Getting even more excited now!

well im back ! did not go to an 'event' but went up to london for the day - the Hyde park bit to watch the big screen , then a walk around london and a trip on the Air cable car by the o2 and the london eye - the whole atmosphere in london was awesome - i only took my sx220hs and im very glad i did ! it was quite a odd experiance only having a compact but made me work much harder for my shots ! i went to record the over all feeling and the odd canded street shot - worked quite well will post some shots up after ive had a fiddle with them , i found just having a compact fine the only thing was that its slow.. dog slow , and fiddley.. i ended up leaving it on AV with auto iso .. while up in the 'wheel' i used a few of the 'toy settings 'like miniature mode - and am quite pleased with the result ! also down on the south bank was a hive of activity with loads of street performers - really recommend it !

blimey there is a win id like ! have a good search on the web and see what sort of pictures people are getting ? id agree that the more gear you lug around will effect your enjoyment out of the day

Heading to the basketball today and taking my micro four-thirds gear. Just got some great results on my honeymoon from the tiny three-lens kit, so hoping the zoom and 45mm hold up as well in the Olympic park. Image quality's been "good enough" as I try the system out this year and the smaller size means I'm taking the kit out a lot more this year...really comes into it's own when you're on your feet all day!

so what gear is it you have ? cant wait to see the pictures :)

Thanks, great advice! Will have a look. Hubby has offered to carry gear, so it is just the question of taking it around London for the day and night. Sarah

having walked around london all day im so glad i did not bother taking 'to much' i saw one person with a 'grey' lens on there camera all day.. thats it ! loads of people with 5d's and 'red ringed' lenses though

I didn't think we were going, but we've picked up some cheap tickets for the volleyball at Earl's Court later this week and some very cheap Olympic Park passes for the Paralympics (betting on getting some cheap returned event tickets). I'm leaving the DSLR behind and just taking a Sony HX20V. I'd rather enjoy the event, I don't want to spend it all behind the lens.

My Powershot SX220 HS arrived today, now to learn how to use it before next Tuesday!

i'll be going to the swimming, any suggestions on what lens to take think the 17-55 maybe best 1 combo lens to take but not against atking 2 if need be.

any suggestions more than welcomed.

id prob take the 50mm 1.8 as it gives you a bit more speed if the light is not to good... im sure though the 70-200 is to long to get in ?

Trying to get tickets when they release them on Thursday night for Friday bag is ready with 1d4, 24-70 and thr 70-200 going to head down anyway as the day is booked off work and see if we can get tickets at box offices down there or hope they bring in the 30 minute rule of reselling seats.

I don't think you can just turn up at the box office to buy tickets. You need to buy them online and then you collect them from the box office.

Yes! Please take note of this! Apparently lots of people are just turning up at box offices and been quite upset when told they can't buy anything there and then.

Thanks
That is information that isn't on any website, it is useless the website.

I do wonder how they propose to sell the tickets after 30 minutes of no bum on seat if they are not selling at the venue.

Little John- i've got some basketball tickets this morning, i've found they seem to put tickets online 8-9ish and 10-midnight.
Hope this helps.

Yeah its only 20cm long, body on the back goes up to about 28-29cm so under the 30cm length. I wont add the TC's till I get in there.

I'm not going to hyde park, there was someone in the crowd last night at the gymnastics I think, yes they had an olympic lanyard with pass on but they were using a 400mm or longer hand held in the crowd not a photographers vest.

The accreditation around their neck will allow most photographers into the first level of restricted areas. Having the vest as well allows them into more restricted areas.

Now have to decide what to take to paraolympics, we are going to the equestrian at the end of the month, would love to take the 70-200, but I suspect that will be very borderline, I know one person has already said they got theirs in, but even so..... probably play it safe and take 50 & 85 primes

fine for olympic stadium?

Yep, I meant that as part of the Olympic park :) just don't use a lens hood on the 70-200 or you will annoy the person behind you.

I think you'll be fine with almost any 'consumer' SLR zoom, saw loads of people wandering around with zooms up to 200/300 size. Basically as long as it's not pro size (long-as-your-arm style) they don't seem that fussed at the Olympic park.

I suspect they're more bothered about it obstructing other people's view than any pictures you might take.

Btw the equestrian venue's a long distance to the far side, on my Olympus e-pl3 (that's 2x crop) I can't fill the frame with a 150mm zoom on the far side of the arena, but horse and fence is more than half the frame so I'm happy. Anything from arena center to closer was fine so plenty of shots to take!

I went to the football at the Ricoh Arena last night & was happy with the pictures from my iPhone/S90.

I know but soo many people say I look like my Dad, the security on them is quite high as well with a stripe thread in the paper, watermarked paper, laser etched laminate pouch, holograms etc.

Yeah, they actually also work as visas for entry for all foreign atheletes/media/coaches etc, all pretty neat really
