Just a shot in the dark,
Isn't that why we have laser guided torpedo's? ( or whatever) :D

maybe it isn't there?
That was one of the points I was also making, they aren't 100% sure that it is, but they called in
the froggies to help as we don't have the search capability any more.
So its someone in Whitehall getting twitchy, its an excuse to purchase new seek capabilities,
or the Ruskies have decided now is the time for world domination :D

well putin is on record as wanting various bits of the world which he says belongs to russia - these include a large chunk of finland , and alaska as he says that the czars sale of the latter to the US was not valid , as the CZar had no right to sell that which belonged to the people ... of course in reality that is just so much posturing but still..

oh dear (or words to that effect) there goes another good holiday destination ,if it carries on like this all the u.k campsites will be full next year ,time to buy shares in pontins etc

lets be clear the tourist destinations of turkey are a several hundred km from the border with syria. and i very much doubt any direct conflict between turkey and russia will occur. neither side is completely stupid.

Sharm was pretty popular, and seemed pretty stable until a couple of weeks ago.

I'll have to take your word for that. It's a dangerous arena to practice brinksmanship.

BBC are now reporting the Turkmen in Syria shot both pilots dead as they parachuted out of the plane. I have literally no idea whose side Syrian Turkmen are supposed to be on but that doesn't seem terribly sporting.

well russia arent going to attack a NATO member, and turkey certainly arent going to go all out at one of the worlds nuclear powers.

We might want it, for all sorts of reasons, but I'm not sure we need it with it being only 35 miles from the Med.

depends if we and US want that airbase. which i imagine we do.
which again will be quiet pointless if putin gets p***ed and turns it into glass

yeah lets not forget our aircraft carriers will be ready in a few years and they might actually have some planes for them by 2025 :coat:

Syrian Turkmen brigade deputy commander Alpaslan Celik tells Reuters:

Both of the pilots were retrieved dead. Our comrades opened fire into the air and they died in the air."

From the BBC's new handy guide to Turkmen....

Who are their allies/enemies? Their main opponents are the regular Syrian army and the Islamic State militant group. Some units have allied with Kurdish fighters.

So they are fighting the people we used to want to bomb who are friends with the Russians and also the people we now want to bomb whom the Russians are also thinking of bombing a bit. Presumably (since they are fighting that nice Mr Assad and don't seem to like Russia) they have been getting a bit of bombing all to themselves from the Russians.

If it wasn't so deadly serious, it would actually be funny. It's like one of those video games where there's a massive 3 or 4 way war going on and periodically various outside forces will bomb a side apparently at random and for no reason.

Really, I'm struggling to understand what "rebels" mean here. Or even what the white bits are.

The path of the Russian plane is shown on Pprune. If correct, it looks to be quite a minor incursion. A shoot down seems to be an extreme response.
Turkey says it warned the Russians 10 times. Issuing a warning is not the same as a warning being received or understood.

The Syrian rebels claim to have shot the aircrew as they parachuted down. These airmen no longer posed a threat. Just about everyone in that part of the world seems to be tarred with the same brush.

lets not forget how many times turkey has warned russia over the last weeks.

What if its proved that the plane was not in Turkey airspace ?,and it does seem odd just after a week of the massacre in Paris and the world is suppose to be singing from the same song sheet let get IS,that Turkey is singing from a very nationalistic song sheet :(

theres a lot of pantomime going on there (he said, she said) so not sure where that proof will come from.

There was a piece on From Our Own Correspondent the other day from "air strike command" somewhere in the area. It was an 18 year old bloke on a roof with binoculars and a mobile phone. His mates would call up and say they were getting beaten and he would phone up US air support and ask if they wouldn't mind helping them out. Until his battery died.

I think "a bit messy" is becoming a bigger understatement by the day.

But even so, they are not at war with Russia. Does it really justify shooting their plane out of the sky.

If a Russian jet violated our airspace do you think we should shoot to kill? Based upon what we know currently I think it is a tragic and unjustified overreaction.
