YES! that scum that torched miss selfridge..

Greater Manchester Police say an 18-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of arson after the Miss Selfridge store in Market Street, Manchester, was set alight overnight on Tuesday. The suspect is in police custody for questioning. Assistant Chief Constable Garry Shewan said the arrest was a "prime example of how quickly we are working". (BBC News)

there's that one off scotland where they did the anthrax tests in the 50s - okay so its not safe for human habitation , but i'm sure we can make an exception , and before our social concience bleats ' but what about the prison guards ' - dont bother with guards just dump the ****ers there and let them fend for themselves, supplies can be air dropped once a week

And with thousands of builders apparently out of work and the phrase basic prison ie cell, toilet, communal showers and a some where to eat I am 100% certain it could be build for a lot less, and out of interest can you provide a valid source for the figure you state or is it just an assertion rather than fact??? Yes I've me an assertion with my comment ;)

why spend that much - thats for as fully equiped leisure centre prison , a basic concrete box prison is a damn site cheaper.

also that money spent in the recession goes to building companies who then spend most of it on paying decent hard working people, who then pay income tax on it and spend the rest on buying food annd good, paying rent or mortages etc - so the govt would essentially be injecting the money into the economy and creating jobs - which is exactly whats needed in a recession.

The Government would do it, as long as you don't mind being taxed more and having services cut to pay for it? Then you need to collectively pay £40k+ a year to keep them in prison where they can either reinforce or develop a drug addiction. They might also learn new ways to commit crimes from other criminals which they might put into practice when they are released as they will be unlikely to gain employment due to their prison record.

As ideas go, it's not looking like a winner.

Like what? FFS please tell us what your mind boggling solution is.

It doesn't cost £170,000 per person if they're imprisoned with basic facilities in a strict regime where their sentence is actually a punishment and not a minor inconvenience.

By the time we've counted the cost of this lunacy it will no doubt pay for the building of 3 or 4 prisons staffed by people who can actually install some discipline into these thugs.

Thats what I mean by keeping it basic, no tv, no ps3, no internet. Just a small cell, and thoudands of them. I think the money saved from giving them jobseekers and letting them cause millions of pounds worth of damage to the cities should cover their basic keep. I know it wouldn't happen due to human rights, but in an ideal world some exceptions would be made to handle the worst of the scum...

Anybody able to work, who does not gain employment within six moths get thier benefits stopped.

Finally, Ive got the end of this thread, sheesh. In agreement with 99% of the people on here basically. But not "UrduPal", who in 36 pages of trolling has yet to answer a direct question. Must be a politician.

Can I just add, to the island suggestion of chucking them all on a remote one, could we also ensure that said island is under 8' of water at high tide?

Had neighbours hammering on the door at 10.30 last night. Local gits had set fire to the garages that are in a seperate cul de sac behind our houses. Next door but one was worried that the trees would carry the fire to his fence which would move onto his house.

Had a nice time talking to the fire brigade when they arrived. Luckily only one semi derilict garage was affected but the flames were certainly taking hold when the fire engine arrived.

All of this in sunny, supposedly affluent Wokingham!!!

What does it cost then to warehouse these people in basic prisons then? Where does the money from? Who are you recruiting to staff these time bombs?

As for solutions there is no catch all solution. Obviously there will always be room in prison for serious offences. Restorative justice or community service would be better for the less serious offenders. Putting people in jail to steep in criminality means one thing, recidivism.

Do you mean something along the lines of shorter sentences but 'harder time'? As in being put to work with a high productivity rate. For some of the less serious offences that might make sense if some practical way of implementing it were drawn up.

What do we do with people after 6 months then? What about people with 2 or 3 children that rely on these benefits? What do we do, go back to the Dickensian era of the workhouses?

It doesn't matter what it costs, if it's a need for society which we have to meet and clearly it is.

They should be staffed with people capable of instilling discipline. Ex army personnel would be a good example - people capable of enforcing their will and where necessary showing them what it's like to bullied and intimidated by someone bigger and tougher than they are and without bleeding heart prison visitors interfering.

Between the late 60s and mid 90's I've been in most of the prisons in this country, so unlike you - I 've seen the changes and I know what I'm talking about. I've seen many people changed for the better by the prison system and of course many who haven't been, but the bottom line is they're off the streets while they're in there and not able to commit further offences.

Some are, some aren't. I mean breaking into and torching a store would carry a stiffer sentence than stealing bubble gum. It needs to be judged on a case by case basis.

I think this is something many of us would like to see for serious offenders. But the problem nowadays is the mass of 'rights' that are extended to criminals and enshrined in law, making it very difficult to meter out what might be appropriate punishment or education.

You're right of course, but we used to have just that - it was called Borstal Training and it was a tough regime they didn't like one bit. ;)

I remember hearing about it. My parents would stand over me if I'd been naughty saying "do as you're told or you'll go to Borstal". Just the threat of it was a useful deterrent in those days.

If you haven't found a job after 6 months and your benefits are stopped what happens? What happens to the 2 or 3 children, starve, on the streets, what?

I'd rather money is used for job creation and trying to find people work whilst they are on benefits or those long term benefit claimers doing charity work to earn their benefits. It is a far cheaper solution than stopping them, watching them decamp to the streets or turn to crime and housing them for £40k a year.
 
Easy answer is yes stop giving them benefit money but give them vouchers instead for the essentials in life and yes bring in identity cards so you can only exchange your own vouchers, not sell them.
I'm fed up with hearing people say it isn't worth them getting a job because they can do better on benefits :bang::bang:
