So Tottenham burns!

So those that shout and rant about poverty and prospects, irrespective of the fact that they really are not in poverty, and have ruined their own prospects have been pandered too.
For example, after the 1981 riots in Brixton, I worked in Lambeth, and there were plenty of jobs going. The local yooof, didn't want to do them. Ok, maybe they were not the best paid, or the most interesting of jobs, but they were a start. !

When I was at school there seemed to be a common enough scenario in place where we received a limited amount of pocket money from our parents and we were expected to get out and find some work if we wanted a fancy gadget or suchlike. We couldn't claim that we lived in poverty (though I now wonder what people regard as poverty) and basically we were still expected to pull our weight. So most of us had weekend jobs washing the dishes in local restaurants or hotels, waitressing, working on the pumps at the local garage etc. None of these can be described as glamorous jobs, but we didn't feel ashamed of doing menial things because it was cool to earn your own money. When I look around now at some families (irrespective of social strata) many of the kids don't do those jobs nowadays because they think it's beneath them - instead they expect their parents to give them the items they covet. And if the parents don't or can't, the kids feel aggrieved.

The death toll has now sadly reached 5. A man that was beaten up in Ealing over the weekend died in Hospital.

FYI: The use of water cannon has been approved by COBRA. Some of the PSNI stock was unloaded from the Belfast to Stranraer ferry earlier today.

That's a rather futile gesture considering what they are designed for and what their role in a riot situation is: ie dispersal and deterrent.

that contradicts what BBC says..

"The Police Service of Northern Ireland says no water cannon has been sent to England and there is no immediate plan to do so"

Awful. Awful. Our system of catching criminals is effective, but I hate to think that some of the perpetrators might go unpunished.

I read via a friend on Facebook that first person in the dock at Highbury Magistrates Court today was a 31-year-old teacher!!!:eek: Apparently, she pleaded guilty to looting of Richer Sounds in Croydon.

That's actually shocking. She isn't much of a role model is she? I would like to hope that the school she works for will terminate her employment but I doubt it will happen. We know teachers can behave badly - ever seen them in action at their annual conference: heckling speakers, shouting abuse and generally behaving like unruly kids. And then they face the same in the classroom - forgetting that their pupils have probably seen them raging on tv and think they can do the same.

It is shocking. I've known some teachers socially and I'm sorry to say that a proportion of them chose not to discipline their own children (and I'm going back many years to the days when it was OK to do so). Some of them seemed extremely liberal. I stress I am not accusing all teachers of this.

That's bloody shocking... That HAS to be a sackable offense, surely - it's hardly setting high moral targets for the kids she teaches/taught, is she?

How were things in Oxford last night? I heard of a car getting torched yesterday down this way, but nothing more than that, thankfully...

Yup - someone has just got a snotty about misinformation.

Wait out on that one, I'm seeking confirmation, but the Beeb are often behind the info stream when it comes to publication.

Mark, what was it like for you last night - did you go out on the streets?

8 hrs spent in London with little result, as thankfully it was mostly quiet and what did happen was stamped on very quickly - Canning Town for example.

Where are we going to put all the SCUM that get convicted ?? Prisons have about 170 slots left,,
I have an idea bring back the Ark Royal put in the middle of the Atalantic and use her again to protect the UK as a floating prison..

Neil posted it on #1073.

Look on the bright side - education pays off. She obviously had enough class and knowledge to be aware that the quality of kit in Richer Sounds is far higher than that available at Currys!

I'm pretty much speechless about the whole thing.

On one side I have people on Facebook saying things like,

"Why are people shocked by the riots so much ? surely this was inevitable in a corrupt, elitist, monetary, social system. though misguided im sure it will soon come to cause. my advice, just sit back and watch it all burn baby,"

On the other hand I've got people saying,

"Watching ITVThisMorning infuriated me. Why not use plastic bullets? Why not use water cannons? This has gone beyond the 'We are a soft and humble community' stage. Its time to start being hard on these c**** and start thinking, if the police CONTINUE to be soft on rioters, what's going to stop them doing it again? Sure as hell won't be the police."

And I've got other people saying this,

"Libya had the right idea. The civil unrest must continue until the state steps down in place of change. The people just have no other way of getting taken seriously. When the libyans kicked off even the police stated to stand down and cheer with the protestors. The police and army are all people too, they will hopefully realise that we are on their side."

You know what I think?

There is no goddamn cause. It's ignorance and greed. It's lazy, selfish people who have no intentions of working for what they want. Typical criminal mentality. I understand the frustration of some people who can't ever seem to make ends meet, but those are a minority. We live in a society where advertising rules. You need this, you need that. It's a shame people can't learn to live within their means. I want a better TV, I've had the same old crappy one for several years now. I'll wait until I have more disposable income to be able to make the financial decision of purchasing a new TV. I'm not going to go out and rob one.

It's sickening really. Fighting for a cause? No you're not. You have no understanding of politics, and so stop making out as if it's a retaliation against the tories. You're a bloody sheep, and it would really probably be better if you were just locked up, because however animalistic and fascist it sounds, I know that 90% of the kids running around smashing stuff up, setting fire to stuff and stealing, will never ever be anything other than a burden on the taxpayer.

One person in court this morning was arrested after stealing 2 Burberry T shirts and was referred to crown court and COULD get up to 10 years. Beggers belief.

They have a much better returns policy too!

looting is pure out of hand now

Police are often very slow to react to situations, very slow to make decisions and it isn't difficult to see why. They have such a complex chain of command and so many arse-covering bosses that the people on the ground, who actually know what needs to be done, aren't allowed to take decisions and the people who can take decisions won't, because they know that the best way of getting to the top is to avoid controversy.

And therein lies the crux of the matter, this type leadership (and I use the the term loosely) has been endemic within the Met for years.

Rubber bullets are in fact 41mm long hard plastic slugs fired from shotgun cartridges. They kill both the innocent and the guilty. Why would any police officer take the risk of killing someone without an absolute, cast iron written guarantee that his job, pension and liberty will be safe?

Not quite true Garry, there are specialist anti-riot weapons such as the ARWEN 37 (I mentioned it much earlier in the thread) that the Met used to have although this was a good few years ago, I helped on the initial testing and assessment of these when they first got them. Not as lethal as the shotgun type of round and much more accurate.

Your right it does I'd treat it as two separate crimes so they could get 20 years :D

We lost one of our stores, burnt to the ground:(

In an area where unemployment is high, well done, just added a few more to the unemployment:shrug:

Beyond belief:shake:

What about the beanbag rounds that can be fired from a shotgun?

so where are all the none working deprived kids then?

they're the more experienced looters and didnt get caught

I know a lot of these idiots are pretty thick , but you've got to be ****ing certifiable not to think to cover your face when going robbing on cctv -

I gather it's this Alexis Bailey: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/educatio...otional-interest-with-vulnerable-student.html

Didn't lose a teaching job for long as was "unlikely to reoffend".

As for Oxford: well trouble broke out in Blackbird Leys, Barton and Headington but that's actually quite normal behaviour. I wouldn't have classed it as a riot. But the police are watching out for trouble.

There was a threat made via Twitter to attack Witney (which is much nearer to me and my nearest town) as it's where the Prime Minister has his constituency offices. I did have a tantrum at the person who posted it: pointed out that we in that area are NOT to blame, we've tried really hard to build Witney into a decent town over the years and we will not appreciate any rioting, arson, looting, violence etc... nothing happened last night but I am still fearful. I sent the exchange of messages to the Police for their information. I'm not being a snitch - I just don't want to see any more violence escalating in totally pointless places.

There goes the bleeding heart liberal excuse of poverty for causing this.

In court faces charges was a Primary School Teacher, a Trainee graphic designer and a lad who has signed up for the army. + a few others in employment.

so where are all the none working deprived kids then?

Look, Croydon is fairly posh, OK?

Finding a scrote-to-hire there can be a real PITA!

It is not the same person who was in court this morning

They may both share the same name and be teachers but the person in court this morning was male

Robin: I am so sorry to read that. It really beggars belief and I have no idea what else to say except that my thoughts are with you.

A few other people in this thread have reported losses that are personal or they know people whose houses have been destroyed.

I wish I knew how to help people other than offer my genuine and heartfelt thoughts and prayers to you all.

Okay. Thanks for the clarification. And apologies to the female Alexis Bailey for the misunderstanding (just in case she reads this).

I think there was some confusion outside the court about the sex of the person - I can only assume that there are so many people going through the system this morning that it's impossible to keep up with them all.

I wouldnt worry too much - there are a lot of gob*****s on twitter who are all mouth and no action - I saw one guy who was trying to get people to attack Chequers - hmm yeah right , i'm fairly sure that the guards on duty there have live rounds and the authority to use them... but then its easy for idiots like that to be brave when they are safe behind their computers
