So there will be a royal wedding next year, any takers?

Just a thought, as William is a helo pilot why not hold the wedding on one of those aircraft carriers we have with no planes on them? there is cattering staff already there (ships cooks) and the captain can marry them.
It would cost b****r all really, a tank of gas for the chopper, the ex royal yacht britannia could bring out the families (with tourists footing the cost) it would be a lot cheaper than closing half of London and getting police in from everywhere to line the route.

Why would the captain of an aircraft carrier want to marry the ships cooks?

What is disgusting is £16 million compensation (gag money) to 14 so called victims of torture!

Which is £4million less than the estimated costs (to be paid by the taxpayer) for the one day of security for this wedding.....;)

 Well that £16 million could 'potentially' buy a lot of bombs stuff? ..... If it was paid toward the wedding security for the protection of people and not given to people who support killing others? .. then it would be money well spent  as I said earlier this country has loads of money :D

You haven't met many Naval types, have you?

 Thankfully NO! .... I do remember their the slogan though! ..... "Join the Navy, feel a man" :D

I wish them well. They both seem to be OK people. The wedding will bring money into the country too so I cant see why people are moaning. If you dont want to see the wedding dont watch it. I will enjoy it.OK it will attract a lot of media coverage but, lets face it, there isnt too much other good news on lately. Its all doom and gloom and politicians moaning about each other.

Don't think i'd want to take up valuable space on my memory card,....£80m for a wedding at the taxpayers expense is a damned disgrace when you look at all the cutbacks that have just been announced.

The best thing about the royal family was spitting image :)

Once again, I think you are being short sighted.

£80 million cost but will bring in over a billion in revenue for the country, seems like a pretty good return.

You know I'm really not convinced that a royal wedding will bring that in. A billion extra tax? how many people do you think are going to come to London to see the wedding?
From my past experiences of royal wedding all the city went dead quiet, shops were SHUT for the most part. How much will we loose by colsing half of the capital?

It's not going to be from everyone going to london on the day, it's everything else that goes with it. The tacky giftware thats created and sold, the extra newspapers that are sold with pictures and stories of the planning from here on in, extra interest in the royal family from people abroad who come to visit more up to the event and afterwards ... etc etc.

Will it be an OK wedding or a Hello wedding? I reckon there's a bidding war as we type over the exclusive rights to the bash. I suppose Tatler and Horse and Hound may lob in a bid or 2 as well...

Over a billion! What a load of tosh. Where did you get that ridiculous figure from?

Qt, the guardian. Plenty of sources, do a little research before you claim something is tosh or not, otherwise you can end up looking a bit silly

I notice that you carefully avoided using The Sun as an authoritative reference! :D

Any tourist revenue will be almost exclusively spent in London and 99.9% of the tacky souvenirs will be produced in China, so at best that's a tad optimistic....

OK. For a start, they're all quoting the figures from some research company called Verdict - who say that the wedding could produce £620 million pounds of extra spending. The quote I read used the word 'could' five times - they don't sound too confident. A far cry from "will bring in over a billion in revenue for the country".

And where are we getting this £400 million quid from (how much they reckon we'll get from Brit spending)? Presumably by not buying something else. So that's not earning revenue for the country, it's redirecting money already in the country.

So we're down to the possible increase in revenue from tourism. Verdict say "The tourism industry could see an additional 216 million pound benefit." Wow! That's an increase of around 0.25%!

I'd be willing to bet that the VT coverage fees for foreign broadcasters are quite spectacular!

To be fair, no-one can predict with 100% certainty how much extra income any event will generate....

A profit us a profit. The point is, everyone is slating them saying how much it will cost the economy when the truth is that the economy will benefit, by how much is still to be determined. But it's still a positive effect on the economy

That's what the Greeks thought about the 2004 Olympics ;)

Yup, but they were still paying off the debt from the construction of the original hippodrome in BC 2000! :D

Is that the year 2000 Before Cameron or Before Clegg :D

Who do you think will give Harry away when his turn comes, his dad or Prince Charles?

And in June, I bought a few more Chinese souveniers of the Athens games at hugely reduced prices.

Because the genuine relics from the Parthenon were 240 years older than the genuine relics from the Terracotta Army and much cheaper, therefore making them better value?

Can I ask......

why?

You just did.

It remains to be seen whether I will answer your question though!

Because I needed a pen and they were dirt cheap (€0.25 IIRC)
