I am on the look out for a good 'L' lens that will mimic what the kit lens on the 40D produces (17-85) I have to say the 17-85 is fantastic but I am restricted to EF lenses on the 1 Series, that leaves me with the 70-200 2.8, 100-400 and the nifty 50.
I did a shoot last night and ended up using the 40d with 17-85 most.

Any suggestions folks ?

How about a the 85mm f/1.2 L?

You could also look at the 16-35 f/2.8 L and the 24-70 f/2.8 L.

What's your budget?

it's a no brainer, 24-70 F/2.8L

Budget smudget, well having said that a grandish tops, low light capability so the 2.8 is good, 85 is out as I don't want a prime, 24-70 sounds like it may be the one, will maybe hire one and see what the criac is, I do so love the 17-85 though !

I think I will hire / borrow one and have a play, I think the kit 17-85 will have to go though , sadly :(

Try not sell it. You will miss the lightweight combination the 40D and 17-85 have to offer you. This can prove essential on long days where it is easier to chuck the 1D MKIII in a backpack.

Yep 24-70 f/2.8 L seems to be the best one for your needs, i'm keen on getting one myself :D

If you want to spend a bit less and keep the 17-85, then the 24-105 is also a very good lens. I traded my 24-70 for a 24-105 and love the flexibility of the extra reach at the long end. Seems really useful on FF or 1.3 crop to me.

was that a straight trade? How do you find the lack of F/2.8? I have the 24-105 and absolutely love it, but sometimes it'd be ideal to have that extra stop.

if it must be f2.8 or beter then 24-70mm is the jobbie, otherwise the 24-105 would give you a bit more reach in an f4 as wez says.

No, I got a bit of cash too... I found I'm using it outdoors most of the time and stopped down to get DOF, so decided that for my usage, the f/4 with IS was a better bet.

It makes a great 4x optical zoom digital compact when mounted on a 1Ds II !!!

Well I think it will be the 24-70 2.8 then :) better hit target next couple of months then my line up will complete, well apart from the extra Speedlite and huge prime with nice carbon tripod and sexy tripod head and maybe a 1DSMk111 - sadly not alot left to sell so I better graft my ass off :)

Thanks for the advice, as always some good info !

Will let you know if I decide 100% I'm offloading my 24-70. Can't get over this feeling I'll miss it when it's gone but the cash would be good for the 300 f/2.8 ;)

It might be worth taking a glance at the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8.

24-70 F2.8 L USM
24-104 F4 L IS USM Will give you the same low light capability as the F2.8 with the IS.
16-35 L USM

I think the 24-105 is just ideal with the 1D. I looked at the 24-70 for mine but couldn't justify the additional money for the extra stop. Add the IS on the 24-105 and the extra reach and you're sorted, for less money too.

I wouldn't worry about the extra stop - the ISO quality is top so no problems there.

For those bonkers shallow DOF shots I keep a 50mm 1.8 in the bag. Often cant find it because its so diddy, but comes in very handy.
