So then, about that charity shop donation you made........

LOL..

heres a fact for you.. we gift loads of stuff to local charity and obviously we are registered for gift aid to which we receive statements for and they make a fair but from the stuff we gift them...

anyways when the first statement came through it mentioned about if we want the monies from the sales and I questioned this next time I was in and yes it is true, I can ask for the money from the sales. I was absolutely stunned dead on my feet.. 'but surely no one does' I ask 'you'll be surprised' was the reply..

who does this?

I refuse to do the gift aid bit these days, why should they need name/ address/phone number and email ?
Yes I'll give stuff to charity shops but not that gift aid bit, same with entry to certain places it just generates junk mail and phone calls

To prove you're a taxpayer? Because if you weren't, there'd be no tax to claim back?

That's the assumption on my part anyway.

Pretty sure the taxman doesn't have my email address or phone number so my address should be enough to prove I pay taxes,
he definitely knows that ;)

Yeah, I was just referring to the name and address bit.

God knows why they need the others*

*so they can sell it on as marketing info.

You don't have to provide email or telephone number for GiftAid. They may ask for it but it's not a compulsory requirement.

I was asked to fill in a gift aid form at the Red Cross shop, but apparently it only works for them. The sensible thing would be to have a gift aid number that could be used in all charity shops.

Oh indeed, I've not got a problem with supplying name and address really (in the absence of what you suggest, which I think is a good idea), but if the form includes phone number and email, you aren't required to complete those parts.

Perhaps they should tell their employees that ?
I was once told that it was necessary information to make the claim, refused and that was that,
no longer do gift aid and don't intend to start, wonder how many do automatically fill it in and get swamped with spam calls and email.
There must be a reason they put it on the forms, if it's not required to claim

Yes
It's saleable information.

I'm betting (hoping?) it wasn't any of the things in this article. http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/l...y-shop-lists-full-8254616#zcZyktLaREUhCC3J.97
DAMN! I wondered where those decoy's went :D

I would be interested in this as I have many family and friends who support gift aid and not one has mentioned being swamped with spam of any sort because of it..
I've never had any "comeback" from "gift aid" either.
But then I've never given a phone number or email.

They probably only need your NI number anyway, but I guess a lot of people don't know it, off the top of their heads anyway.

They could of course take a tax reference or NI no, but that'd be too easy for charities to fake, so they ask for a name & address so the tax office can cross ref to make sure you're a taxpayer.

And as Viv said, you aren't required to give any other info. but the charities feel that once you're filling in the form you'll just carry on.

Weirdly (given my truly appalling memory!), so do I.
