So tell me why I need a Ipad!

I put off getting an ipad for so long, so long in fact the ipad2 i had was replaced by the 3 a couple of months later and I can honestly say that I personally don't know how I managed without it.

Not strictly from a photographic pov but more as an all in one solution to a digital life, I surf, work, play and display on it. Where as before I used to use my mac at home and my iphone on the move, i quite often just use the ipad now wherever I am. iCloud helps keep everything sync'd together so that i can also access things on the mac or iphone.

If i'm on a shoot and the model is taking time in make i'll watch a movie while I wait, then during the shoot I use it for music and showing a model how I want the pose to look etc.

The Portfolio app is great as it locks the ipad, so I can hand it to a client and they only see what I want them to see.

As Ploddles said though, only you can justify the large outlay of cash..... I went for the 64gb wifi and tether it to my iphone for 3gs when out of a wifi area.... i'm sure there are cheaper tablets out there, but if you're already in with Apple the ipad makes perfect sense

Been sitting on the fence for ages as to whether I 'NEED' an Ipad as a photographer.

As a photographer you don't need it. As a human being in 2012 ? Yes you need it

I was like you and didn't know if I could justify the purchase but I use it every day on and off morning till night, it has really become a part of my daily routine.

ITS SO B****Y HANDY AND USEFUL !! :bang: DAMN YOU APPLE DAMN YOU ALL TO HELL !!!

Could I live without it ? Yep. I could also live without my car, camera, cooker, freezer..... you get the idea.
Would I want to ? No way.

Thats great guys and really appreciate the comments. It sounds like it is one of those items in life where you don't know how much you'd miss it until you have it. Loving the portfolio option as well being one of the reasons I can justify having one.

Just to throw something in the mix then. I have a Galaxy note and is great for mail, browsing, and is just about ok to give people who want to get a quick look at my portfolio. Can I still justify an ipad?

I don't think I could afford to jump across to iOS (2 laptops, 3 PCs)

I also have an HTC handset and I'm hunting for a tablet for showing off images and browsing on the go. My portable editing laptop may also be getting upgraded as it's a bit heavy.

iTunes and iPad will work just as well on pc :D

I have a pc & a mac there pretty identical with syncing, mac is better though?

well i didnt know if i needed one or not but i got one on Saturday and took it down to a studio session i did yesterday. A 32gig iPad3 with the camera connector thing as i thought it would be better for previewing to models than the back of the camera.

Well it worked reasonably well. The biggest drawback is the speed of file transfer. Its really not quick. I was just transferring the jpeg's over (it will read nef's too though) each file around 10megs and it was a bit too slow frankly. Ill do some timings later but just about to leave for work.

The screen is stunning though, no other word for it. I got the iPhoto app for it and that seems to work ok for little preview tweaks, showing a b&w conversion etc.

So i found it very useful to a point, it would be nicer with a faster port.

What size were the jpegs?

I watched a friend shoot tethered wirelessly to an iPad using his Nikon with an eyefi sd card and capture one. The jpegs were showing on the iPad after a couple of seconds.

dont see how, USB is a standard protocol. unless the PC is a much lower spec than the mac.

Don't shoot the messenger its just an observation I've made. Im proberly wrong.

I absolutely love my IPad.
It gets used on a daily basis, is usually near me when sat at home and is usually in my backpack when out shooting.
I would love the DSLr remote app, but, at £30 it's too expensive at the moment.
Stop thinking about it and get one, they are only £240 second hand (iPad 1).

I had a tablet (not an iPad). Didn't use it. Couldn't justify the money to play Angry Birds so I sold it. I do keep my computers on 24/7 though, so I'm probably not the norm...

My curiosity is piqued. What's this setup? Those eyefi fi cards seem the business, how do you sync them with the software though.

Im a canon shooter with cf card only in my 5d2, I think he had shutter snitch on the iPad and capture one on his mac, the shot went to capture 1 and then on to shutter snitch

OnOne Software also do an iPad app to control the camera, called DSLR Camera Remote. There is a free and paid for version. Download the Free PC/Mac program and connect that to the camera via the USB lead and then control it from the iPad.

If you have to ask then you don't NEED, you just desire

The type of work I do at the moment tends to be either sales from proof cards or supply of Cd-rom to clients, however I think the only justifiable reason to purchase an ipad would be if I had an increasing number of clients needing to review the shots for selection, for which an ipad is a great marketing tool. I think up until that point I'll hold on to my dosh or wait for that moment of weakness!

Forget DSLR remote, just tried the free version and it is extremely buggy, not happy with it at all, good thing I didn't fork out the £40 for the full thing.
Great idea, just a shame that it didn't work.

Well I've used it a number of times (free version) and never had a single problem.

Hmmm, strange, firstly, mine couldn't see my server, then, it couldn't see the camera when the server clearly could see it (Canon EOS1100D) then, when it finally got onto it, it didn't show me an image of what I wanted to take a picture of, it did try and focus the lens and it did take a picture, but, not much else, so, I am a bit wary about it.
