As you may have noticed based on the fact every news website, tv channel, forum and everywhere else having topics based on it, we're meant to get some really bad storms soon.

Is anyone else debating if they can go and get awesome storm photos? :D

I'm wondering how much I can weatherproof my poor D90, and where I could go to safely (Dad can't afford a funeral) get photos of the Cornish coast in the storms :D

Anyone got any plans for photos capturing the dramatic stormy weather we're meant to get? :D

Use a lens with a lens hood and put the camera in a thick clear freezer bag body first so that only the lens hood sticks out. Duct tape the bag to the hood. For extra credit, chuck a few sachets of silica gel in the bag first to absorb any condensation/drops of water that make it inside.

Now short of dropping it in a puddle it's pretty much waterproof*. Be very careful because if the bag gets wet it will be very slippery.

If you want to use it on a tripod then make a small hole near the thread and screw a quick release plate on. Waterproof the edges with more duct tape.

BTW I just saw an article on the BBC advising people to stay away from trees. So you should probably be careful. I'll be safe inside under the 80 foot oaks.....

* really extreme rain can still get in through the front but realistically if you get rain like that in the UK you'll have more to worry about that your camera.
 
I don't get it, looking on the weather maps it says on various news sites that I'm expecting 90mph winds (outskirts of Salisbury) but yet the BBC weather site suggests that I'm to expect a calm night with 11mph winds, who should I believe? Considering my cottage backs into a meadow and we lost 2 trees onto the driveway over night......

I was at Goodwood yesterday in the ******ing rain with the 1DX and it got completely soaked - I checked the BBC weather site of which it said no rain that afternoon so I didn't pack my water proof camera gear either, thank Canon for their weather proofing otherwise I would have been screwed for a new body and 300mm F/2.8 yesterday afternoon!
All I can say is, don't believe the forecasts, just cover yourself on all angles in the event of something happening over night.
 
I know KIPAX, but I looked and found no threads on photographing them :D Elsewhere people are panicking.

Thanks JonathanRyan, that's a very good guide :D I think handheld so I can tuck it into me is probably best. I know a few places locally I can get to safely (ok, small risks, but we always have trees falling in cornwall each winter, can't just not leave the house for 3 months) and not be near the paths etc. Won't be standing on coastpaths 6 feet from deadly drops or anything.

Flightphoto, don't know, I think the storm may hit and they're not 100% sure, obviously I'll see how things look in the morning to be sure of if I'll go out and try for storm photos. Have wanted to for years and just never been the right time!

Anyone else going to be nuts enough to try? I guess it's a slightly coastal thing.
 
West facing cliffs? With plenty of room behind you in case you do get blown backwards! I'm staying well away from the coast while the storms a-blowin' - mainly because wind blown sand and sea water aren't too kind to cars! Might see if my wife's into tking me down to Exmouth on Tuesday (or maybe even tomorrow if the storm's blown itself out by then) to see the aftermath but we'll park inland a way to avoid the worst of the debris. D10 time I reckon!
 
There was nothing spectacular in Clevedon this afternoon :( Wet and windy as usual :lol:

I can't imagine any great pics at night (except for lightning which is not expected), maybe someone will get something interesting at sunrise. I expect to be in bed :) at that time
 
Seem its going to hit my area around early morning,might get out and try and get some photos :)
 
Wild and windy here on the Isle of Wight. I went down to the beach twice today - the foam is flying high. I went a cropper with my camera! Glad to say my camera and lens was held safe whilst I took the brunt and got covered in mud! I was videoing at the time - something I never use my DSLR for and I was wishing I knew more about it... A winter project for me :)

North coast seems best as it looks to be hitting cornwall from the west, so will kind of force the sea into the north coast from the side :D Not going at night, hoping tomorrow morning will be a winner!

Good to see I'm not the only one interested, shows how foamy it's gotten bepop, hoping for more dramatic versions :D
 
Please don't take any risks just to get an awesome shot.
We don't want to hear of anyone out in this being injured or killed. :(
 
Don't worry, lived in cornwall my whole life, as did 1 parent (the other for most), know of the safe and risky places, won't be going anywhere I can get blown or swept away. :) Just hoping I can get 1 or 2 semi-awesome shots from safe viewpoints. Won't enjoy them if I'm dead!

Know of a couple of places I can get to and not be right by the sea (or, you know, edge of a cliff, because that's always smart in 80mph+ gusts...) so will be safe. May end up soggy and with wind blown hair, mind.

We had a few good waves here in Aberystwyth at lunchtime... The RNLI station recorded a peak gust of 42kts (48mph) at 12:30 but it's still predicted to hit hurricane force!

I've posted a few pictures HERE if anyone would like to take a look. :)
 
I understand they've closed the local seafront. It's neap tides at the moment so sea levels shouldn't be too extreme, though the wind will drive them higher than the stated figures

An earlier news report I saw said a photographer was missing on the seafront at Lyme Regis.
Please take care if you go out in the storm, during the 1987 storm I was a newspaper tog, and I was nearly killed twice in the one day, first by corrugated iron sheets blowing over my head, the second time by part of a crane that collapsed just missing my car... And I was being carefull. I was just very lucky, but it could have gone either way at the time.

I'm in the Northwest and I popped out to Crosby beach with the mutt today and just about got sandblasted. We are more or less in Liverpool bay, so quite protected really. The windsurfers were making the most out of it in the artificial lake just behind the dunes.

Apparently Kent is currently getting the worst of it.

It's a beautiful day here but just to be sure we've cancelled all trains and ferries. Mainly to stop journalists coming here and telling people how lovely it is as far as I can see.

Sadly that means the motorways will soon be full of lorries unable to go to "Europe" so our roads will get busy.

Working on the coast today so this could be fun.
 
Feel rather left out, lots of wind but no trees fallen, the highlight of the night was that we were woken at 2am because a pheasant had got blown onto the bedroom window sill outside of which it decided to stay there for 10 minutes staring at us through the glass! Sunny, blue sky and autumn colours - just another October!
 
Looking out of the window the rain gauge is showing 1.5 inches and that's about it, nice blue sky now and the car looks clean :D
 
Dodged a bullet here.
It rained all night, but no wind to speak of.
The news reports are saying the south got a hammering. :(
 
Wasn't too bad here. One tree has lost its branch and the trees were helped along with their shedding leaves. Although down in town an apartment block has had some of its wall ripped off and a double decker got blown over
 
Cat didn't like the noise the wind and rain made in the middle of the night but a quick cuddle helped calm her! No damage to our property - even the 20+ year old fence panels survived. We did take in the bird feeders just in case and put the wheelie bin in the garage but other people's seem to have stayed put. Not much autumn colour left on the trees we can see from here though.
 
I drove to Brixham this very morning (Monday) (7am) I was hoping for dramatic waves over the lighhouse and jetty- what a disapointment- sea was flat as a mill pond :shrug:

It was fairly quiet around here last night apart from the rain...

I think we should spare a thought for the families of the two people who lost their lives to falling trees overnight. :(

Just got in from Folkestone. Looks like it got hit fairly hard but not devastating.

Sea was pretty rough. Lots of small businesses closed due to the weather :(

Oh and heard on the news that a girl got killed by the storm in Kent last night :(

Well, that was a let down. Sea was choppy in the morning, but we have worse storms that that at some point in pretty much all winters in cornwall. Usually a few of them. Guess I'll have to wait for a normal cornish winter storm that nobody bothers report on the news.
