What's his game do you think? Is this more about maintaining the fear over the population or does his have some military aims?

Interesting development.

The BBC report seems to suggest they've claimed this, but no-one really believes it was anything other then a small atomic test

Measured 5.1, some big bang. The interesting thing is how the chinese are now distancing themselves from them, a previous ally. Be interesting to see what the UN says about this breach.

Until they have a miniaturized warhead then it can't be launched via a missile, so for now at least there's no real inter national threat

The weaponisation is always the difficult step, but if they could make it small enough, deliver it by truck to south korea. They still feel victimised and have a huge tunnel system. It's a valid threat

Even without making it small, they could use a plane to drop it on SK probably. But then, there's so much artillery pointed at Seoul that they can flatten that in an instant anyway. I just meant a wider international threat won't be there until (if they manage) to miniaturise it

Triggering it reliably is the issue for droppign it from a plane, plus getting it stable enough to travel (hence the weaponisation step). Big difference between detonating a test device and having a weapon thats usable. However, a hydrogen bomb is a big step up from atomic.
So they might not have the delivery method yet, but they have attracted attention, which is what they wanted.

The UN will do what they always do - send a stiff letter. If that is ignored they will send another one then arrange a lunch or two to talk about it ad infinitum.

My opinion on wmd is that nobody has them or everyone has them. There's already a lot of 'nasty' countries with nuclear weapons. Israel, Pakistan, Russia, The USA, The UK etc etc.

NK with an H-bomb? Wonderful. Maybe now they can concentrate on pulling their populace out of third world poverty - perhaps keeping the lights on would be a start.

Actually I think it's time we took a leaf from their book there and turned ours out more.
Bloody planet's lit up like some tacky tree bauble year round :-)

So using that logic we should give a couple to IS then?

Seriously, U.K. And USA are nasty countries??? Based on what? If it's so nasty why live in the uk?

NKs main problem seems to be that it's run by an elite that's paranoid, ideological, and incompetent.
Their agriculture and infrastructure are in a right mess, but they're still spending vast sums on prestige projects, and the military.
They never fully recovered from the famine in the '90's, but national pride seems to get in the way of just requesting aid.
Instead, they shell a bit of South Korea and threaten to declare war on the US, to get the world round the table to offer them stuff (such as food aid in return for arms control) to placate their sabre rattling.

I suspect the NKs drive for nukes is linked to their big hard Chinese mate up north losing patience with their constant belligerence.
If they ever sink a US ship, or bomb Seoul, or otherwise go too far, I don't think it's a forgone conclusion any more that the Red Army will come to their rescue.

I wonder if its coincidence that there was talk this week of Japan wanting to officially sign the WW2 peace treaty with Russia?

Maybe it was seen coming and Japan wanted a big strong allies that nobody dare pick on?

Show me in my post where I said that IS should have wmd. I can wait all night I've finished work for the day now :) IS are not a country. And also, the only country to use nuclear weapons to maim and kill hundreds of thousands of innocent people is the USA.

We seem to be slowly, I drive in the dark a lot this time of year and more and more what I would consider to be dodgy places / junctions are becoming un-lit
But I do agree that there are a lot of places where they could conserve power.

You have street lights on your roads, wow luxury :)

You said everyone or no-one, you did not specify countries. What if IS completely took over a country?

The USA did use nuclear but that was 70 years ago? It's probably a debatable point but that act did save many lives too. Pretty irrelevant!

One could argue that the world seeing the effect of the atomic bombs used by the USA to end the war with Japan was a good thing - ultimately if they hadn't used it then that war would have carried on for a while, granted we can't know for how long or even to what outcome but irrespective of this the whole world saw and learnt just what nuclear weapons could achieve in terms of innocent casualties and collateral damage.
Had the US not used them then, would some latter day despot or even the US themselves used one later to far more devastating effect? The Fat Man and Little Boy bombs combined with all the other ordinance used in WWII are thought to total 3 Megatons of TNT equivalence - just 15 years later the USA and USSR had H-bombs of 25 megatons, and in 1961 the USSR tested at 50 Megaton device. But because we had all seen the horror their small predecessors unleashed they have never been used directly.
Sure there's been a lot of willy waving since and Kim Jong-un is trying to join the party. Hopefully even he isn't so stupid to drop it on his neighbour?
The box was opened long ago, there is no future without these weapons in it. Non proliferation seems the safest way forward - yes it might seem 'unfair' to those that don't already have them but there are enough allies and treaties even for NK to keep them unused and unusable.

I would definiely include the USA in that list of nasties, even if I don't agree that we should be there, now that Bliar has gone...
The USA have demonstrated many times over that they will attack other countries to frighten others into selling their oil in US$, and to bank with them, and now they have increased their base rate to re-inforce the point, even though their own economy is far too slow to justify either the increase or the threatened 2 further increases

I heard they haven't even got the bomb. I heard Kim Jong-un just got everyone to jump up and down at the same time.

I heard they have miniaturised it. I heard they did such a good job someone put it in a drawer somewhere and now they can't find it.
