You've been asked to be at the finish line of a popular race, with a wide funnel to "suck" in the athletes as they complete their half-marathon race. What settings would you use (Nikon D7000), in regard to focus mode? I'm fine with speed, aperture etc. If there are 4 or 5 runners coming in together, would it focus on the nearest body to the camera? I used AF-C mode last Sunday but tired after 4 hrs of shooting around the course and then at the finish line. I know, read the manual.
 
That's what I use, BUT it was so tiring trying to track hundreds of runners and moving that little black square.
 
depends if you want to pan if there head on and your just wanting them all in 1 use a wide angle lens set at f8-f11 al servo should get them in focus and all in the frame
 
I covered races such as the Great North Run, Manchester & Birmingham when nearly 40,000 runners are finishing. Its impossible for one person to capture all but your best option could be to use a wider lens in landscape fired by a remote on the camera your using with a 70-200. Settings for the remote should be manual focus but TV for your own.AI Servo (Nikon equiv).
I am assuming you are trying to cover this by yourself?
 
as graham has said its near on impossible to get every one id say two cameras one with a 70-200 range and some thing uwa if you can and have the lens around f8-16 you should get 4 or five runners side by side i tend to use the 70-200 range to pick out the ones that give you the thumbs up or stand out/in fancy dress etc ,on the times that i take the wife with me i let her stand at the finish line with a uwa or the likes .here is two albums on my flicker if you look at the exif settings it may give you a idea what i use and i /we still miss loads of runners
