Good evening fellow TP members

I'm after some advice if I may :)

I have recently become interested in photography, bought an SLR, new lens etc etc but the time has come to invest in some filters :D

I have had a mooch around the tinterweb to see what is on offer but there are just so many! This is where you guys come in ;)

Basically, I'm wanting to know where to start, what to look for, what to avoid. My budget isnt that of a very rich man either unfortunately. If you had no filters at all, which ones would you buy first, to start from scratch? Ive been looking on www.warehouseexpress.com which looks like a promising site, especialy at the Cokin bunch??? I basically want something to help enchance colours slightly and possibly some ND graduated ones?

You help is appriciated!!!

first i'd have a circular polariser then a ND3-4 and infra redis always handy.

I've gone for the filters which I can't replicate in software, and they Circular Polariser, Neutral Density, and Graduated filters. I'm not that interested in Infra Red, so I can't justify that cost.

There are varying degrees of ND and Graduated filters, but I only have one of each. It could get quite expensive otherwise. ;)

yep whorehouseexpress are good on prices & very good on service,if however you use fleabay i can reccomend a seller called crookedimaging ,slightly cheaper and also very good on service.
as for filter type a circular polarizer is very useful as it can be used for various effects but they arent cheap
nd grads are also useful & a 1 stop + a 2 stop should be enough for most if not all occasions.

the only other thing is i'd say buy the P sized filters rather than A size as the smaller A size could easily cause vignetting .

i've just noticed wez130's post & the mention of infra red filters , some cameras are not good for infra red photos my d 80 is awful for it so maybe your d40 is ,something to do with sensor type .

Personally I would go for a range of ND grads. This is only based on my personal experience as they are the ones I use the most. I have circ pol, but rarely use it, I just never seem to be shooting in the right conditions for it to be usefull. I much prefer to stick an ND grad on and bring the sky detail out that way.

I use warehouseexpress too and they are very good. I would recommend a P holder and adaptor rings for your lens/lenses and a nice middle of the road ND Grad such as the "Gradual Grey G2 Medium (NDx4)" which is what I generally use :)

I have read that these Cokin filters can be off neutral, slight orangy tinge? Is this anyting to worry about?

Also, how practical are these Cokins to use? I dont want somthing too fiddley to be carrying around all day :)

Cheers for the replies so far guys!

I have never noticed the orange tint. The filters are fiddly in a way. If I am using them I tend to leave the holder attached to the front of the lens(e) and just slide in the filter when I need it. Its a very simple system, its just the attaching the filder holder rings that can take the time :)

Sounds like Cokin it is then. *Runs off to go on warehouseexpress.com* :D
