So iPad 2 or 3....

You can read entire A4 pages (PDFs of magazines etc) easily without zooming and view web-pages in portrait mode at full width with ease. Both of these things were difficult or impossible on the iPad2.

Really?

I hadn't noticed that... Lol... I read full page PDFs on the 2 most of the time and web pages ....

Thinking.

Same here on the 1 :) Annotated countless of PDFs full page...

It obviously depends on how big the type is on the page. When viewing PDFs of magazines full-screen, the font size is usually too small to read comfortably without squinting a bit or zooming and panning.

Even for those of you who think you can read such small text easily, try it on an iPad3 and you'll suddenly realise just how much easier it is and how much you were having to 'try' before :)

Agree with this… I spent 10 minutes in pc world today comparing the 2 and 3 and you literally cannot see a pixel square on the new ipad. It really is quite amazing.

Is that worth the extra 100 quid? Well thats up to the user I guess.

if you do a lot of reading it has to be worth it for photos though - i would not say say it was worth the upgrade.

FWIW, I upgraded from my iPad2 primarily because I wanted more space and 3G connectivity. I had a 16GB Wifi iPad2 and wanted a 32GB 3G one. The screen update was merely a bonus, nice to have but far from essential. If I'd already had a 32GB 3G iPad2 then I wouldn't have bothered.

Having used the new model for a couple of days, I've changed my mind. The screen is impressive enough that, in retrospect, I would have upgraded from a 32GB 3G iPad2 to a 32GB 4G iPad3 just for the better screen. It's that good and makes that much difference to my usage of the device.

sounds like the screen is impressive if you do a lot of reading its got to be worth the £110 more over an older ipad 2

Mainly work type documents (yes some of us use them for real work ;)) so around 11 point text and tables. However Zinio magazines like AP and MacWorld I hardly ever zoom in either.

But don't get me wrong I am fully aware how much better the new iPad is in that respect, it is just a reaction to some pretending it couldn't be done comfortably on the iPad.

Well I guess everyone's different but my eyesight is near perfect (have it checked regularly) and I often struggled to read small print without zooming on the iPad2 so I think many would have the same experience.

The screen is absolutely stunning, and well worth the extra over the iPad 2.
The best display I've seen on anything (computers, TVs...).

If you want to show photos on your ipad, the the new iPad (3rd generation) is better by a long shot, images look incredible on it, i've put the same pics on the iPad 2 and new iPad and the pics look so much more detailed on the new iPad.

Other than the screen there is very little difference, but for me, the screen is really worth the relatively small increase in price over the iPad 2.

Got my 3 delivered this afternoon....definitely worth the money. It's a media consumption device so getting a vastly better display is a no-brainer.

ipad 3 has much better screen, and it is really obvious looking at text or photos.

BUT: there are many many complaints I have about them both http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=394206
Wait for new Samsung Note, or Windows 8 devices - if anything apple may just have to remove artificial limitations from the ipad (then pick the best of them)

I have just received an ipad 2 as a gift, I am contemplating taking it to an apple store to exchange it for the ipad 3, do you think they would oblige as its brand new and still in the box?

Wait for new Samsung Note

You cannot be serious!

Go back to using a touch screen that doesn't work with fingers! Never in a billion years.

I went from an iPad 1 to the new iPad. Immediately obvious changes were
  • The screen - Yes it is substantially better.
  • Multi-finger gestures. Makes the 'multi-tasking' easier.
  • More memory - I presume this is what has enabled more apps to retain information when 'multi-tassking'.
  • Speed - overall speed is better, especually graphics.
Not sure if I'd have upgraded from an iPad 2.

Having compared them both I can't tell the difference

POAH, I think you must be having us on! :-)
The one thing I will say though is that you need to be comparing the new iPad running apps that have been updated for the retina screen against those on the iPad 2.

Unfortunately not.

Firstly, their is a price difference between the 2, and secondly there is no right in law to just return something because you don't want it anymore.

You would need to sell the iPad 2 and then buy an iPad 3.

If you have the gift receipt and it is within two weeks of purchase than apple would take it back no problem.

Honestly could not tell the difference. Maybe I'm just immune to apple

Lucky you! I could tell a big difference and hence it cost me loads extra :bang:

That's why I haven't gone to have a look at the new one, I only got my iPad 2 in September, and I know when I see the better screen I'll be wanting to upgrade again, I read a lot of PDF's on my iPad.

Even if bought from Comet, Currys, PC World, Argos etc?

No, it is an apple retail policy hence I remarked that if you have the (gift) receipt it wont be a problem.

It wasn't bought from an Apple store but i can get the receipt, only received the ipad 2 yesterday, i am going to try it anyway, they can only say no.
Failing that i will sell it on.

Im sure you have at least 7 day return policy, whatever you got it from. As long it is new and unopened.

You would need to sell the iPad 2 and then buy an iPad 3.

That would depend on whether it was purchased in person or online/mail order. If the latter then the DSR apply.......

It would, but the OP's question was whether he they could just take it back to any Apple Store and swop it. This wouldn't really be possible, even under the DSRs.

No, unfortunately in the UK there is no blanket 7 day return policy in law.

There is no right of return for goods bought in shops other than faulty / not fit for purpose.

There is a separate return right in the Distance Selling Regs, which allows return for mail order / Internet purchases within 7 days.

The way i look at it they are
1 - Keeping the customer happy.
2 - Getting a brand new 3g ipad 16gb and i am giving them the difference in price.
3 - I leave happy with an ipad 3.
4 - Or i sell it on.

Throw this into the mix.
My wife has said I can have an iPad3 for my birthday, BUT do i convince her the money would be better spent on a new bit of glass for my bag and some extension tubes?
I already use an iMac at home and I bought her an iPad2 for her birthday. She loves the tablet and is never on my iMac.
I can't make my mind up. I keep looking at primes and then at the apple site!

get both :)

I'd like to know where everyone is getting there iPad 3 from... according to Apple it's either the iPad 2 or the "new iPad". I can't see an iPad 3 anywhere ;)

Seriously though, a friend of mine got his "new iPad" on release day and when we compared the screen to my wife's iPad 2 there was a noticeable improvement, so much so that I'm tempted to get one myself :)

Tis not - brother in law has all three and I couldn't tell the difference in what I would consider normal use. Not to say other people don't see a difference just my opinion. Christ you give an honest view.....

Then your eyesight must be sufficiently poor. It's as simple as that really.

It's either that, or you havn't seen one at all.

It's not really something that can have an opinion. The display is very different that is fact. It does look different. An opinion could be that the difference didn't make it worth the extra cost. But to say there was no difference is simply incorrect lol

Read this: http://www.anandtech.com/show/5689/the-new-ipad-retina-display-analysis/1

Got my 32gb Ipad 3 yesterday, I upgraded from Ipad original 16gb, theres no comparison, the retina display is amazing, and I'm a firm believer in the "you can never have to much memory" adage ! I'd have bought a 64gb if I could have afforded it.
