No
from someone at Gumball 3000 who wanted to use one of my photos in a coffee table book. Great I said, how much are you paying?

<1 minute's silence at the other end of the phone>

So he started again saying how much they liked my photo and would I like it to be included in the book. Great I said, how much are you paying?

"errr we thought you would like to be credited for your work"

I laughed and asked for £850 for single use UK distribution only, or £1500 single use worldwide.

Apparently they're going to think about it and let me know.

Was I unreasonable?

PS This is the pic

Good for you Ross. I always respond to such requests for credit only 'work' by saying 'Perhaps you would like to give me your house or flat. I'll credit you for your kindness'. :naughty:

I don't suppose the printer was going to print the book for free - and I doubt if they'd be giving the finished book away. As photographers we must get paid for every picture used! Well done.

Erm, your not unreasonable to charge, but your fee may be on the high side. I use the NUJ fee's guide that J Gordon posts frequently for queries on how much to charge. Guide for a book is between £100-300 for a full page. Good for you if you get it though.

I plucked the figure out of thin air at the time... they may come back and offer me part of what I asked for or maybe nothing at all. Either way I'm not going to lose, as I have a day job which puts a roof over my head and keeps the wolves from the door.

ask them if you can enter the race next year.
when they tell you how much it costs to enter then say 'really? its not free?'

I know one of the professionals that was allowed to go on last years rally as a passenger (normally £40k entry fee for a car and two people) and he had to give up all rights to all the photos that he took over the course of the week.

My other half used to work for Gumball so I know exactly what they're like.

Haha thats excellent  Good for you for telling them to pay up!

Great stuff, shame they expected it for free, good on you for sticking your ground.

Good on you, though you did ask for way too much (and of course probably cost yourself a sale as a result). Do your homework :P.

Yes, I shall suitably chastise myself by wearing coarse hessian underwear.

Thing is, I was put on the spot somewhat and didn't have a clue as to the value :gag:

The funny thing is the people who organise/enter the gumball are not short of a bob or two. Yet they would quibble over paying for a picture, no wonder these people have money and i'm always skint.

Its a cool piccy mate, I can see why they want to include it.

Hope they pay up a reasonable amount, even if its not the full price you gave them. Good luck.;)

Ross, I'm probably telling you how to suck eggs here but If put on the spot I always ask what specific useage they want etc, take the contact details and tell them you'll come back with an accurate price, which I do based on the NUJ rates unless it is something 'news hot', which is rare. The 'doorstopping' approach is a method to panic people into making a silly offer, either too low or high. If they are serious about using your work, and I can see it's a great image, they will wait for you to calculate a rate and go back to them. It's just a tactic they use.
