So hard to choose! 650D or 60D

Just got the misses a 450D from here so now want to get myself a newer canon.

Its come down to the 650D or 60D. I thought the 60 would be the clear winner but having used them both in store I am now not sure!

Both feel different in the hand, but for different reasons I like the feel of them both!

So what's the better choice? Probably be a 650d with 18-55 or 60d with 17-85 (although not used this lens before).

Going to be used for a bit of everything - not video though.

Pros and cons of each?
 
Well, I like more compact gear but even so I'd rather have the 60D as I like shooting with wide apertures even in good light.

As the Canon XXXD's have a max shutter speed of 1/4000 second in good light I'd need ND's and that's a mess on. The 60D can shoot at 1/8000 second and that'll enable shooting at f1.4 in good light.

So, as I'm a wide aperture fan... it'd be the 60D for me :D

I realise it's a bit of a specialist choice :D but all info helps I hope! :D
 
60D has a deeper buffer and larger battery capacity. If you aren't going to be using it for video I would go for the 60D.
 
I am in a similar situation, but looking at the 600D vs the 60D

I discounted the 650D as i'm not fussed about HD Video recording, but when you look at how much cheaper the 600D is compared the 60D, there really doesn't look to be £200 worth more camera in the 60D over the 600D

Tis a good point and one I didn't consider when swapping a 20D to an 1100D (for compactness reasons) I sort of expected that if an old 20D had 1/8000 then the newest even lowest level camera would have it.
I have since moved to a 2.8 lens so issue has largely gone away now which is more luck than judgement!

The touchscreen is a really nice feature of the 650D but the image quality really didnt blow me away - I think I was expecting too much from it compared to my 450D. Either the 650D or 60D will take similar pictures in the majority of circustances - personally I'd grab a 600d at the price they are now.

Where I live in dingy northern England at f2.8 1/4000 is usually ok and it's usually only at wider apertures that I need ND's.

I was out with my G1 today, max shutter speed 1/4000 second, and sure enough I needed ND's at f1.7.

It is a mess on but if it's a deal breaker that forces anyone to spend £200 more on a camera that'll go to 1/8000 is up to the individual to decide.

60D for me but I'm not the one buying it.

The 60D in my opinion is a notch up in build quality and functionality. Better to handle and has the wheel mechanism for making changes which I find easier.

Unfortunately nobody can really decide for you, it comes down to very personal feelings.
 
I do like the compact body, and 1/8000 is not a deal breaker for me.

Build quality - I couldnt honestly tell that much difference between the two - although the 60D did feel heavier the plastic felt of the same quality - a lot better than my old 500D. Then again the 60D did have the 17-85 attached!!!

Top screen is nice on the 60D and pretty sure bigger lenses such as the 70-300 IS USM that I am considering will balance better on the 60D..

So had another play with both again. 60D most certainly seems a higher grade of plastic. Not sure how true that is, but seems much more solid. Also, top screen is very useful indeed.

650D touch screen was superb, but a true fingerprint magnet! Trouble is, it felt very un-camera like using it, think I prefer buttons! No doubting the build quality has improved, but still don't think they have the grip quite right.

Think I will go with the 60D with 17-85 which seemed to focus quicker and be of a bette build. 18-55 on the 60D just felt wrong!
 
I had a 17-85mm and I don't think it's a great lens.

The zoom range, IS and USM are great but optically it's ho-hum or perhaps even poor IMVHO. There's CA and huge distortion at the 17mm end, I think I read that one test site said it had more distortion than any lens they'd tested.

Personaly I'd give that lens a miss, actually I gave mine away, and go for a quality 17/18-50mm f2.8. I went for the Tamron.
 
the 15-85 is supposed to be a belter never had one though
and the efs 17-55 f 2.8 is a gem

Got to agree with the Woof, i own the 60d and the 17-85. The 17-85 seemed ok when i had the 450D, but not happy with its performance on the 60D. Think i would go do the body only route and look for a more suitable lens for a great combination.

Only you can make the decision. Good luck with whatever you decide.
 
I've been trying to decide between the 650 & the 60 as well so I'll be folllowing this thread with interest. My decision was made even harder when I discovered there's a 650Da as well! :D
 
I recently had the same choice when upgrading from my 1000d and I chose the 650d. I'm loving it, it does show up the difference between the 18-55 and my tamron 17-50 2.8 much more than the 1000d did.

I find it feels good to hold with a battery grip and the build quality is miles ahead of the 1000d
 
I think I will go down the 60D route, but financially it will just have to be with one of the standard kit lenses until I can afford some higher end glass.

The 17-85 seems a bit marmite! Some people seem to hate it whilst others love it!

If only they made the 650D a bit bigger with a top screen, then again, I guess that's what the 60D is.

There is always the 18-135 kit, but the range is a bit odd to me, especially if I end up getting a 70-300 lens, just a lot of over lapping.

I have a 60D and the wife has a 650D and having used both there really is an awful lot between the two. Both have very similar IQ, the 60D has the faster shutter and better ergonomics (which was the reason I got it) but the 650D has better ISO and a great touch screen which almost negates the need of the rear dial, it's slightly smaller than the 60D but beyond that they are very similar to each other.

I got both from Panamoz.com and got great prices for both and also got the 40mm pancake lens to go with the 650D (though it does go on mine at times) and it's a great combination. If I was new to dslr's I think I'd go for the 650D right now, but after shooting a couple of years and getting used to other bodies I'd go for the 60D, purely for the ergonomics.
 
I was going to get a 60d but just ordered a 650d from DR, having a 1dsmk2, 7d & 30d the 60d was sounding like a 'more of the same' type thing wheras the 650d seems a bit more gadgety so will be fun to mess around with, plus I already have the 40mm so will be nice to see how it performs on a made for STM camera.
 
Right, I'm going to jessops on the way home to try both again and a few different lenses.
 
60D for me because of the window on the top, build quality and does it have a wheel on the back? if so, they're damn handy
also 17-85 lens..not winner for me either
it looks so good on paper, but go outside (if you can) shoot some vertical buildings in the left or right hand 3rd of the frame and then what the world curve!
too much of a compromise.
17 ish at the wide end is great on a cropped sensor, but just not that lens imho
 
Well just been in jessops and no 650d but they did have the 60. Must say that the buttons in the middle of the scroll wheel are pretty bad! Body fits nicely in the hand though.
 
I had a 550d and upgraded to the 60D.
I have to say it was worth the upgrade .
I'm not using the 18-55 that came with the 60D but instead purchased a 18-135 :)
Great all rounder. Very very happy, and the shutter sounds nice too !
 
Gone for a 650D. Decision made!!

Now, prime time. Cheap and cheerfull 50 f1.8 or siggy 30 f1.4.
