Hi all,

I'm just wondering, has this ever happened to you?

So at work, this guy opposite thinks he knows everything about photography, literally. All I hear him do is talk about cameras to others, and this has been going on for about 1 month now. He still calls it the Canon D5 though... And gives advice "No get full frame, get full frame the image quality is so much better..."

Okay, I don't mind people talking about photography, really I don't, that's not what annoys me, but this did...

He literally said "I don't want to do a photography course, I just want to have a good camera that does all the work for me so I'm thinking maybe a Nikon D800 or a Canon D5." Seriously, he said D5 O.o.

How do you restrain yourself from getting up and shouting "IT'S NOT THE CAMERA!!" :bang: lol. Really frustrating.

I think my point is, I find it really annoying when people think photography is really easy and can do it. I've spent maybe 2 years since my first DSLR and I've studied and practiced hard and my photographs are still not that good and to just hear people say stuff like that is really frustrating lol.

:bonk:

End of rant! Hehe.

can you not have quiet word with him and explain that its not just the camera that takes good pictures, the operator needs to see them in the first place.

:)

It's not frustrating, it's hilarious.

You should ask him questions 'out of interest' and make him say even more stupid stuff, because if you give him enough opportunity to talk b0110x even he'll realise what he's doing.

The thing is...it is for some people... I am at the other end.. really took me a very long time.... before I discovered TP which would have moved it along quicker... DOF was hard work... But I know others who pick it up easy and do better than me in shorter time..

all relative..

But your rant... yeagh even if he was brill.. you wouldnt want it shoving up your nose all day :)

I'll keep you all updated with what he says. Literally every day he comes up with something hilarious  lol.

There's a guy like that in my work. The "Know it all, thinks he's good" kinda guy. Bought a 2005 Jag X-type to look prestigious and flips when you point out its a Rover in a frock.

Asked me about Camera's the other week and how I took such good photo's. And when I explained it was all hard work, I got a "Yeah, But it's really down to the camera, nothing to do with skill." Let him away with it and brought in my Film images the next day.My reply "From capture to print, it was all done by hand. No automatic modes, no help, nothing. If I didn't need an expensive camera to create these fantastic images, then it really wasn't the camera that does all the work." He hasn't spoken to me about non work related things since.

Ask him for advice on Hyperfocal Distance and Chromatic aberration and then a link to his Flickr or the like.

He sounds like my nephew :bang: he's an expert if everything too :annoyed: when he actually knows very little.....what is it they say about picking your family  but in all honesty I wouldn't let it get to you....just let it wash in over you

I can see me just sneering in the background as I walk past during one of his high and mighty open talks. Doing rabbit ears behind his back, that kind of thing.

Seriously though, i wouldn't let that get to me. Just tell him straight up that you think he's full of it, and correct him on the camera model in front of everyone. Might just shut him up.

Take a photo in with a deliberate error that would be obvious to anyone who knows photography - WB way out say - and ask his advice on what you did wrong.

Surely what the camera did wrong;)

...

If we're talking 'know it all's' though, I feel the need to point out its a Mondeo :naughty:

I'm subscribing... come on have some fun with the guy...then give us the juicy:D

I had a guy where I used to work claim that a Nikon D200 had a second diaphragm inside the body.
This would allow him to connect it to a telescope that was fixed at f8, and then open it up further.

The supposed reason I couldn't comprehend how or why this could be, was because I only had a D80, which didn't have this secondary diaphragm.

Has any one actually seen any of his super-duper pics, though? :)

Funnily enough a mate refers to his Canon cameras by D*** and not the other way round, actually I've got a better idea of what kit he actually has than he does:bonk:

Paul's photos aren't safe to show anyone else - let's say NSFW:$

Does any camera have ANY sort of diaphragm?
Air-Shutter release perhaps?

One of the MD's at work told me he'd bought a DSLR as a replacement for his stolen bridge camera. Seemed a bit miffed when I told him how poor it would be in comparison without buying more lenses (would need a big telephoto lens)

Well...it may be a Canon D30 or D60 - they were among the first 'proper' dSLR cameras on the market. ;)

Should be careful when slagging somebody else off for saying stupid things.
The X-Type is based on a Ford Mondeo

agreed I have an 09 plate 3 litre Jaguar X Type Sport and its definatley NOT a Rover in a frock - get your facts right:rules:

You don't work in the same office as me by any chance? I have a similar bloke who purchased a 5dmk2 claiming similar superiority over my 550d. I showed him some of my recent family pictures when he asked and he said the clarity appeared better than his and waffled on about mine being a cropped sensor which is why. Should have seen his face when I said it was taken with my iphone an edited using the app snap speed! Idiot sprung to mind. I just laugh quietly to myself that I know in a years time his camera will be on eBay with a picture count of less than 200!

Relax, gentlemen ;) basically the desire to have a camera that does it all for you is not something to sneer at. All the compacts do exactly this, and many of them with amazingly good results. If someone wants to get good results the easy way - why not? Someone who is not a hobby photographer but just wants to get nice pictures of their vacation or kids IMHO perfectly has the right to try and achieve just this.

That said, if I were you, I would not say or do anything. Just let him buy the D800 and discover that it does not have a fully automatic mode :D (or at least I haven't found it yet).

And I'm sure if someone spent 10k on a hassleblad then they "could" produce better images - of course ability to "create" good images has a large input.

Referring to the original post then the best way to quiet someone is show some images you produced on a so called lesser camera, say DX

People like this just can be spoken to but ultimately if this is where he wants to spend his money and think the ability to produce better images is the same as producing them then let him carry on. Having expensive goods doesn't make you good, doesn't make you an expert eiither. Sounds like he is just trying to justify his expenditure

I wonder what lenses he uses / I wonder what his images look like. If he isw having fun let him continue, sounds like you are having fun listening to him

:agree:

I always find that asking questions about what they have said quite effective. As you get deeper and deeper they either admit that they do not know or, more usual, start floundering and making up a load of rubbish.

There is no need to be an expert in the subject yourself, just think about what they have said, ask for clarification and just keep asking about every "fact" they come out with. :)

This is why I don't bother telling people I'm a professional photographer. It avoids tiresome conversations if you get stuck with somebody who thinks they're an expert. If asked, I usually just say that I work for the Government. That soon shuts them up.

We sometimes use a deep dive process for resolution at work which is a copy of an annoying 3 year old. Just keep asking 'Why'

eg: The 5d is a better camera! Why is it?
Because it has a FF sensor! Why does that make it better?
etc. etc.

It's amazing how people just spout what is effectively someone elses opinion as if it's a fact when they believe no-one will challenge them, whilst they're the one eyed man in the land of the blind, they can get away with it, but as soon as they realise you might have both eyes, they're stuffed, then you can have some fun.

*pedantic mode* Erm, well, erm, sort of except it's basically a Ford engine with a reworked top end for Jag but that's hair splitting. I'll agree that there is no Rover whatsoever in there though!

:)

I'd be willing to bet that we all find ourselves on the wrong end of similar encounters, where we feel we can talk with authority on a subject we actually know fairly little about.

There's even a name for it: the Dunning-Kruger effect.
This more or less says that people who are incompetent (in skills they are actively involved in) are likely to overestimate their competence. Their incompetence tends to make them unaware of the limits of their competence.
Conversely, so say Dunning and Kruger, people who are highly competent tend to underestimate their competence. Because they understand their field well, they are acutely (and perhaps overly) aware of the limits of their own understanding.

Of course, this effect has been folk knowledge for years ("the fool doth think he is wise, but the wise man knows himself to be a fool" - Shakespeare). However, Dunning and Kruger experimentally demonstrated the reliability of the effect.

As long as we are clear on the Rover bit. Ain't nobody going to tell me I drive a Rover :)

Here's a few more quotes guys and girls :):

"You should shoot in JPEG's because when you shoot in RAW it still records the noise anyway"

"You get much better image quality with more megapixels and more megapixels means that the camera is better at dealing with noise so get the D800"

^^
