yeah so im looking to upgrade from my 450D and get something more serious business

I have narrowed it down and am currently deciding between the 7D or the 5D MKII

I want to take advantage of jessops' 12 interest free payment plan. the 7D is £550 cheaper and im trying to decide whether to get the 5D MKII body only or get the 7D and put the £550 towards a 100mm Macro or the 24-70 L.

I guess my main concern is whether I should go for the 5D MKII for the better noise handling and I cant make up my mind over that or the other features on the 7D!

7D is 1.6x crop
5DM2 is full frame.

This should dictate which camera you buy really. Do you shoot landscapes/people? Or do you shoot sports?
 
Then I would suggest that the 5Dm2 is for you- though it only supports EF lenses (so your kit 18-55mm won't work).
 
Even if the 18-55 did work, the 5d mk 2 deserves much better! :lol:
 
5dmkII for sure! Full frame would suit your needs a lot better for landscape/people
 
How about looking out for a 5D MkI...Still a superb camera and you can get a nice lens with the discount...

in my opinion i dont see where the extra noise handling capabilities of the MKII would benefit you in Landscape photography. During most day time shots there would be enough light for handholding at a fairly low ISO, and night time would require a tripod in most situations on the MKII anyway as sensor noise shows up more in the dark. As for portraits and people shots, fast primes, such as the 50mm 1.4, 85mm 1.8, 135 2.0 L, would go great with the old 5D which is still very respectable at 3200 ISO (if such a high ISO is required).

I have nothing against the 5DMKII if I could afford one, I would definitely buy one. Just highlighting another option
 
I'll wade in here as I just had the same discussion with myself and came down with the 7d. I have to say the noise looks no worse than any other camera I have seen... Sure at the top end of the range you can see it but I never had iso 6400 on my last camera! and a quick treatment with "neat image" and its totally gone... AND I got to keep all my existing glass which was just fine before. Extras like the accelerometer based level and live view were designed for landscapes. 18MP is fine up to a2 and I can't see any noise when the ISO is kept under 400. Yes I'd like "L" glass but not at the expense of sacrificing other things...
 
After months of struggling with my 50D and not liking the noise it produced in dark areas at low ISO i decided i needed to change body's as i just wasn't using my camera as much as i used to pre 50D. After reading numerous reviews and seeing some of the shots posted here from the 7D combined with very expensive glass i decided to go for a 5D MK2.

Back on subject, as much as I love the 5D Mk II (I'm just about to pick one up myself) I'd say the 7D and put the change towards the 24-70mm....or perhaps the 16-35mm and a prime (85mm 1.8 ftw).

Landscapes - unless you're looking for a particular ultra wide effect - aren't destroyed by the crop factor (certainly the 16-35mm would overcome most of that, and if you're looking for something wider the 7D will take some of the nice ultra wides that the 5D can't handle) and portraits can often suffer from low light conditions, the 7D is pretty good at 1600 and above - which was the max on my old 10D, and I like the think I got some decent shots out of that camera, even at those levels.

Glass lasts longer than bodies....it's a better long term investment....
 
thanks for the input guys. yeah i think its become mainly about how acceptable the higher iso on the 7D would be as i tend to also do quite a bit of indoor shooting at theatres, gigs, bars etc that require it and my 450D of course just doesnt cut the cheese when it comes to this. ive been able to get some good shots when using the 50mm 1.8 on it and when the spotlights etc are cranked up on the stage but anything above 400 iso and it looks meh. hell even 400 iso annoys me.

anyone here got some first hand experience or opinions with using the 7D in low light conditions such as a gig, theatre, bar etc? or is it not good enough that i should just go straight with the 5D mkII for the better iso?
 
maybe a trip to the local stockist would clear this up? I,m sure jessops would let you take some test shots in store.. ( Its dark in most of em ...) than you could see for yourself what it looks like out of camera ( nothing that neatimmage or lightroom cant sort out?? I suppose if you get the higher ISO its ALWAYS going to be noisier than your exiting kit, Isn't it?
 
I should have said that i took some shots of the underside of my desk ( Its dark there and you cant see much at all with the naked eye). The 7d gives you an image that you just could not get otherwise. It virtually sees in the dark

I just thought of some great uses for this... But, I cant discuss them without breaching my restraining order...:naughty:

Part joke, part serious. When you arrive at a junture where you may have to change all of your glass, like potentially going from cropped to F-frame in this instance, you are given the rare opportunity to start from scratch without major financial penalties.

The D700 is the same price as the 5D MkII so it'd be worth while looking. Of course if you're a major fan of the Canon touch and feel then you may decide not to, but it's always worth a look. ;)
 
I don't own some nice canon lens yet but I want to and I have my 'list of lens I will one day purchase once I can afford them'

sorry Nikon chaps you guys are great but I'm sticking with Canon :D. I guess as Kalibre said its the Canon touch and feel. plus it saves me having to learn a whole new system.
 
A great plus for Canon is the look and ergonomics...neither of which Nikon has a clue about...

The D3 was designed by some Italian car designer...forgot his name...and none of his cars are anything to write home about...IMHO at least.
