Well, the Large Hadron Collider starts working tomorrow morning at 0830 BST, I've not seen a thread on here about it yet, so here it is.

First, i bit of an insight into it...

The LHC has caused quite a bit of a controversy with some people believing that it could spell the end of the world for us, with belief that it could create black holes that could grow and gobble up the earth, or that it could create strangelets which if they touch the earth could turn it into decayed matter and again kill us all, a possibility on both counts, but only a small one, infact, you've probably got more chance of winning the jackpot on the national lottery.

So what's actually good about the LHC? Well, it could answer the question of how we, the earth, the universe etc exist, could answer what Mass is etc, maybe find the GOD particle, it's exciting but also risky. They are going to collide particles into a tunnel as thin as a human hair with the force of 2 aircraft carriers colliding at 30 knots, at 99.95% speed of light, that;s a hell of an achievement for mankind.

so what do you think?

If you want a good insight there is a fantastic TED talk on the topic. Well worth watching, as are all the other talks on the site. I spend most of my spare time watching them all.

Hey!! I'm about to go on holiday!! What happens if the world ends while we are flying?? There wil be nowhere to land!!! Where do I claim my refund from for the holiday I wont get??
 
If the world ends tomorrow (or today) I really should have gone and put that D3 on my credit card :D along with a Lamborghini LP640.

Seriously though, theres nothing to worry about :) anything that machine produces will be comparable to what happens in our atmosphere everyday.

Well the bbc coverage was pretty lame.. "oh an I think it's started.. there was a brief amount of clapping, yes.. were pretty sure it is on"

I keep reading it as a large hardon collinder :thinking:

i was listening to the radio this morning and the people were saying that its going to help understand things better and stuff, i did do A level physics and enjoyed it alot so i am interested in seeing what comes out of it.
some guy on the radio was saying that the 5 bill should of been spent on curing cancer, i was going to ring up and say well this might just do that you idiot.
might finaly get back to the good old days of discovery :D
 
They were only turning it on today, they don't start the good stuff till October at low power, then the real big stuff is being saved till next year so we may just see Xmas :D
 
Some German scientist was predicting the full effects of todays experiment would take 4 years and then the world would end!

Since time began some person has been predicting the end of the world and we're still here!
