Thought I would stick up a thread regarding the Snowman Rally 2012, due on the 18th Feb. Is anyone going along? I would love to go and try to take some shots. I've never been to a rally before and my only experience of photography at a motorsport event is at a karting track.

So all advice welcome, I have a Canon 450d, kit lens, 55-250 and a nifty fifty. Also possible shooting locations if anyone knows the stages ;)

Never done any rally photography - but spectator wise there's a few basic do's and don'ts

Don't stand one the outside of a corner,
on the apex,
just after a jump or crest,
in box junctions or runoff areas
All of these are really common sense.

There may be marked spectator areas - there sometimes are.

Do look up when you hear a whistle (marshals use them to signify cars)
If a marshal asks you to move or anything else, please be polite and do as we ask - you'd be amazed the number of people who ignore us or are rude - what we ask could potentially save your life.

And the most important:
Do enjoy yourself!!

Apologies if this seems like a bit of a lecture!

I'm sure someone will be along with actual photographical advise soon!

Nathan

Thanks Natahan, common sense and courtesy are already packed in my camera bag :D

same as karting photography, variety is the spice of life!! dont stick to the same shots over and over... panning is a good start to try, the lower the speed the better, more importantly findd what works best for you and have fun!

always make sure you got a clear path to run as it can be unpredictable where a car can go off

Hope you have a great time. Was talking to father in law last night about going, was saying not been to a rally around Snowden before and should we venture out as its not too far away.

Tried in vein to look for info on Internet about it, only for my daughter to point out its the Snowman not Snowden rally, Well that made for an entertaining night of ribbing !!!! I really should wear my glasses more often

Hey Alan, looking forward to the Snowman too, last year was up in Tain area although was hampered by my stage being cancelled cause a Lancer decided to cook it's self....literately. My efforts here

As for tips on where to go all I've got just now is the stage names

1. Daviot
2. Ord Hill (2 runs back to back through stage)
3. Rogie (extended to 18 miles)
4. Kiltarlity (new stage never been used)
5. Glen Urquhart

I imagine Rogie is the one by Rogie falls at the back of Contin...is so thats where I'll be heading. In terms of photo tips...not the best person to ask, other than arrive early so you can move around to find a good, secluded spot. Thought I got one last year only for a family to dunk themselves down in front of me......:bang:

As soon as I know of any locations I'll let you know.

EDIT:

Another website has some further info...stage 3 is indeed the one behind Contin so that's where I'll be heading out to. Have fun

1) Meall Mor (Moy) - south of Inverness.
2) Ord Hill (North Kessock) - north of Inverness.
3) Torr Achility (Strathpeffer) - North west of Dingwall.
4) Boblainy (Kiltarlity) - Soutwest of Beauly.
5) Glen Urquhart (Drumnadrochit) - Southwest of Inverness.

It seems to be the same with the other Rallies I look at (Granite and McRae Stages being the other 2 I try and get) that info only come avalible about a week before the stage. The programs go on sale on Monday so will get the little brother to get a copy and I'll upload the stage locations as soon as I can.
