Anyone tried this?!

I'm quite tempted to get a Nikon D50 off eBay for this purpose! :D

I'd need a good small bag too.

Now I need to decide if my 18-200VR is expendable!

By the way I'm a snowboarder so hands will be free unless I'm bracing for impact lol!

I took my slr last time I went but didnt have the balls to go down with the camera in my hands as I've not been doing it long. Got a cool shot of a mate doing a jump though. Took a sigma 10-20mm down on my 350d

I've taken a DSLR on a couple of trips and out on the slopes no problem. My concern was always what damage it would cause to me if I fell on it though.

I've done one holiday, plus a few sessions at the MK dome. Hopefully by January I'll be competant enough to carry such an item with me!

I did an indoor shoot at xscape for some media work for their instructors.

I was on skis (I can ski thankfully), equipped with the D3 and 70-200.

Took a little while to get used to trying to carver and pan/shoot at the the same time.

Taking it to the slopes in Austria next January for some real action

thats what I was worried about, falling on it. definately think i'd come off worse

I had my D200/70-200VR on my back last year coming down a twisty red in Kitzbuhel.

Got to a speed where I thought ... if this goes badly, this camera is going to snap my spine. Was papping myself towards the end of it

Love Snowboarding, my favourite thing ever!

I carry my equipment, usually a Body, Wide Angle, Regular Zoom (24-70mm f2.8) and a Telephoto (70-200mm f2.8 IS) for when I want to spend a day shooting pics in a Dakine Photography backpack for boarding/skiing, easy access and it protects your equipment and more importantly your back if you have a spill!

When I'm not shooting stills, I'm carrying my HV20 Canon Camcorder - got some amazing footage going down the slopes and stuff! You get used to it, I'm quite happy carving and jumping while holding my camcorder now...

Give it a try, the results are great :D

Robbys82 - I like your mates jacket, I think it is the Vans one I was looking at :P

Do you use a bullet cam at all, or all hand held?

Have thought about setting up a rig with bullets on the sides of the boots, lid etc but not actually put it into play yet...

14th Jan to Kaprun this time round

yeah its a vans jacket. I think i need to get a bit better before hammering down with a video camera though i did velcro my Nokia n95 to the back of my hand to do some videos this year, very mixed results to be honest and it nearly froze in the -20+ conditions of canada :)

I used to have a Bullet Cam, but when editing the video it didn't look as good as the other footage, so I gave up with that and then held my camera - I'll try and upload some footage soon to give you some idea as to the quality.

If you have premiere (my knowledge is with this program), then you can do some crazy stuff with monopods - attach the video camera and hold it upside down by your feet, when it comes to editing do the verticle flip in premiere and it is like you have some tiny person filming you from underneath! Excellent effect...

I've taken spills with the camera, but it survived nicely, the worst damage was when I landed on it while falling off a rail, bent the cassette tape cover slightly (managed to bend it back though!) :D

I'll post a clip of handholding here soon...

When I'm in the mountains I usually have my camera gear with me (I usually try to have 1 day without the camera bag though), the key is to have a good rucksack that will protect your gear.

The ones at www.fstopgear.com are the best imho.
