Here we go again........... we get a wee bit of snow for a couple of days and the country is coming to a standstill again with schools having to close and rail travel disrupted ,
How the ell did we cope WHEN we actually got proper snow with 6 foot snow drifts for weeks on end. Schoolbus used to follow the snow plough ,also cars and buses used to carry shovels and if they got stuck,dug themselves out .simples
Honestly we dont know what snow is nowadays ,not like back in the 60's and 70's . What a mamby pamby coutry we live in now.
There that's my rant for the day :lol:
 
The trouble is, there are many many more cars on the road today, and many more women driving. I can't see many of them digging their cards out.

There are fewer snow ploughs too as councils have not bothered to purchase them for the rare occasional use they need these days.

But I agree, it's quite comical how we fall apart at a couple of inches of snowfall!

I can recall some atrocious weather during the winters when I attended secondary school from 1977-82. I had to catch a bus and I don't honestly recall them not running due to bad weather, although they may have run a little late, but that's fair enough.

I do remember though once when the buses were on strike for a day........and my dad gave me a lift to school instead!! :(
 
I won't drive in it unless it's utterly necessary, I'm not confident driving in the snow and especially with a dodgy hip and leg, I won't risk it.

Our village pretty much gets cut off as it's off the main road but the local farmers normally come round with their tractors and snow ploughs

What difference does a dodgy hip and leg make to driving in the snow ?
 
It has been laughable watching people this morning going at their cars with brooms and shovels (yes, shovels!) to clear the inch of snow from them, only to leave the roof covered so as soon as they brake at the end of their drive they have to get out and sweep another load off their windscreen.

Anyone would think we'd had 6 feet in an hour! :suspect:
 
Trouble is, a few of the buggers driving on the road today cautiously crawl round the streets in good weather and they then insist on driving in the snow.
Nothing worse than the snowbound tailbacks heading for a hill behind a muppet.

I don't think I'd even bother clearing my car from an inch of snow. LOL.

This is true of England ;)

We get much colder weather up here and Perth & Kinross Council publish a leaflet each year showing all the roads accross the county including when and how often each will be gritted and or salted. We even have the little diddy gritters which do the pavements.

I think being prepared for the cold weather also helps when the snow comes.

My first driving lesson was in the snow :lol:

Seriously, unless it's 6" of snow I still go out, and I only stop at 6" cause my wheelchair skids :lol:

When I lived in County Durham, you'd think nothing of a foot of snow, there had to be 2' or more before the schools closed - and that was only cause the bus couldn't get back up the bank to take the sprogs home! Bloody townies around here are panicing cause there's 1" of snow!! Whatever next?!
 
the only issue with driving in snow is the ***** that can't do it hitting you and blocking the road :D

bold words from a man not deemed safe to drive by governments man :p
 
I think the "chaos" is down to 2 things mainly -

money - the councils don't really want to spend the cash needed to keep the roads clear

Health & Safety - schools, bus companies etc are concerned about being sued these days so cancel everything pretty much immediately


I've been in Scotland a few times when they've had some heavy snow, certainly didn't cause the level of problems it seems to in the rest of the UK :shrug:

Hardly anyone is in the office here today (in Cambridge)

The irony being that we are owned by a Finnish company, and they deal with snow all year round, and manage to get in OK!
 
Our road doesnt get gritted so it was quite snowy and slippery this morning but I still took the car out and our little town was full of shoppers, young and old.Most people I spoke to thought it was great fun and very pretty. Perhaps its cause we are in the country we are tougher.
 
One of the problems with driving in the snow nowadays is low profile tyres with "smooth tread patterns" fine in the dry and wet cr@p in snow and ice. A lot of 4X4 are just as bad as they have wide tyres "smooth tread patterns"

I go along with that, my works van has some of the cheapest tyres available, took it to the end of the road and decided that i wasnt going any-where in it, well couldnt it simply had no traction at all. I could only get the thing about a foot, didnt get any jobs so got lucky there. Took the car out with some proper tyres fitted with top end Michelin Premises HP on it , drove as if there was no snow on the ground.

And airports too. Why is this? Even ones the size of Gatwick or Luton.

It is really inconsiderate of the airport authorities to close the runways because of cold weather, when there are so many people coming back from the last day of the global warming conference in Copenhagen.
