Snow photography

Will be taking some shots today of sledging, the lighting is a combination of bright and shady locations. Any tips on photgraphing in such conditions?

If there is a lot of snow about, try dialling in +1 on the exposure compensation, as the brightness can fool your camera meter in to giving you underexposed shots.

This is good advice. I was having trouble getting good shots of the snow a few weeks ago until I read about the issues with the camera meter. Increasing the exposure compensation by 1 really helped and stopped the dark/blueish tint I was getting before.

I find +2 to +3 for the whitest snow.

I've found going Manual mode makes life easier with snow about. Check the histogram and blinkies to avoid clipping, expose bright enough to get the snow white.

dont use flash, it will just reflect back into the camera and blow every bit of white there is and any colour will be out of focus, id maybe try and get some lower and interesting shots, otherwise they could come out looking like happy snaps
