Does anyone know if there's away I can get up to the minute reports of snow cover in the Brecon Beacon. Something in the line of a web cam/site or simalar would be great if you know of one. On the other hand somebody living in/passing through the area being good enough to post a report would work to. I'm realy interested in this weekend, Saturday or Sunday. Thanking you in advance. :)

I don't know if your an experienced walker or not, but in case your not take care, especially if your planning on climbing any of the hills there. People die in winter in those mountains.

I'm planning to do sunrise from Penyfan on Sunday morning with the possibility of staying over Saturday night to save having an early morning drive.

As Wayne said take care, make sure you are equipped and have basic survival kit in your bag.

Finally fancy joining me on Sunday? Sunrise is at 7:54 so it really will be an early start.

Very nice, I did some night shots from there a few months back but the bloody clouds come in after about 3 pics, couldn't see the view after that.

I did the same thing during October last year (minus the snow!). My avatar shows me at the sumit shortly before sunrise.

As Wayne says, take care and be well prepared because the Brecon Beacons can be very dangerous, especially in inclement weather.

However, if you are thinking of going up Pen-y-Fan (tallest mountain in Southern Britain) then this can be quite safe especially if you use the Storey Arms route which is a well trodden path all the way to the top right from the road. I've walked up there in several feet of snow and it was all good.

The danger of course, is when you treck off the beaten track and not with the right equipment or clothing.

The dodgy part of the Storey arms path is the "steps" before Corn-du, when iced these are very slippery and theres also the drainage gullys which you can't see under snow on the last part of the path before the steps (the steep bit) mind you have gullys on the pont a daf path as well.

Thanks for all your replies and I will be taking safety seriously. Doubt I'll get to the top due to age/fitness but a good walk will do me good (staying to the path). How do I find the story arms? I know the roads in the area quite well as I've fished the local resivious for years and have probably been in the pub before but don't know it's name. :)

It's tipping down here up near Treherbert (Rhonnda) and was down in Port Talbot where I had a shoot this morning so I guess the brecons are getting it big-style....

....and I haven't got my snowboard!!!

Yes snowing all around the Merthyr Brecon area, still snowing in Merthyr about half hour ago (18.00) and sticking on the roads, I'm told the A465 is one lane in each direction on the dual bits in that area.

Thanks again for all info and to Johnsy for the links. I will be leaving in the next hour and hope to spend the night under canvas to save travelling time tomorrow and get an early start so hoping to catch the sunrise after all. Maybe see you tomorrow as well Johnsy. :)

I doubt I will get up there, the roads where I am are a nightmare.

Theres now a crashed twin engined aircraft near the top of Pen-y-fan (or so it says on the news)

Just got back after deciding not to stay under canvas and stick with the central heating with an early start. roads are all ok if sticking to the A470/A465 etc although the side roads are a bit slippy.
